I got the idea from The Café, several years ago, about replacing playing cards with credit cards (preferrably old & out of use cards) but recognizable as credit cards. It still is not recommended in a church setting that is offended by cards but it can be used very comedically as a prelude to a card effect. Bring out the box and talk about the offense taken by some for the cards contained in this box! You can go on in several different ways but I explain the opposition to the cards and talk about how they can be used to addict some or to cause trouble in marriages and families... pretty soon you end up describing credit card debt in a round about way but they are still thinking about them as playing cards and gambling problems or something. Next thing you know I am agreeing with that thinking and furthermore suggesting that many people carry these kinds of cards around on their person all the time. In fact most of the adults/grown-ups in the room probably have some of these cards on their person right now! Anyways, you get the idea and eventually you dump out the cards and reveal the credit cards. It has proven a funny bit for me when I have used it, as I said as a prelude to a card or jumbo card effect. Just thought I would share it again for what it's worth.

However, the same people might judge that "NON-PLAYING" cards (same shape and size, no suits or denominations) with Bible verses alone, might be a different matter. No doubt some strict thinkers might say that the inevitable association of any-style cards with playing cards is a 'slippery slope' issue. |

Look at it from this point. The Suit Of Armour Cards are a great tool to use when witnessing to non-believers. They are not intended to be a replacement to the ordinary deck in a church that condems the use of playing cards.
Editing note: I had to edit my post because the rest of what I said was off topic. I realized that after reading the title of the thread again.

I do a gospel magic show, and almost always use playing cards. Something that can come up that you have to be careful of, though, is that your volunteers may either not be familiar with the cards, or they may be embarrassed to admit that they are familiar with the cards, considering that they are in church! I do an invisible deck routine, and my volunteer denied any knowledge whatsoever of the suits or even the numbers and symbols on any playing card. Eventually I had him just choose a number from 1 to 10, and then pick red or black, and then narrowed it down from there to come up with a selection. I was actually able to play the whole situation up for laughs and everyone had a good time, even my volunteer, but you should be aware that this situation might come up for you if you use playing cards in certain church settings!

Aaron and Denise Gillam presented a very fine routine involving a deck of jumbo playing cards. Denise would hold the cards, while Aaron would pick them up, and tie the number into a gospel application. Very entertaining, sometimes funny, but completely took the "sting" out of using playing cards in a gospel setting.

I hear about these alphabet cards in another thread. Apparently, you can do many of the same card effects such as: ambitious card, card on ceiling, torn and restored cards, and so on and they seem innocent enough.

I have a flash card Svengali deck I ordered form elmwood that is great and I am thinking about using it in a church show with a vent figure as a prediction. I would highly recommend the flash cards.
