Crazy Man's is a great little effect, but Stargazer would be my favorite.

I like CMH, because its the one rubber band effect I can do well.
My other favourite is slink, which I follow up CMH with. With regards to Stargazer, I'm assuming its a gimmicked rubber band? |

Returning to magic recently after a 15-20 year hiatus, for the most part, seeing all the votes for CMH as "the best" rubber band trick, and having never heard of it that I can recall before joining this forum, I admit that I did an online search to learn "how it's done", mainly because I wondered whether I might already be familiar with the effect, if not by that particular name. Sure enough, the tutorial on the effect which I turned up appeared to be the same working as the effect I'd learned many years ago, I want to say it was in Tarbell Volume 7, although my library being in storage at the moment in preparation for moving in the near future it isn't convenient to look it up right now.
In any case, I can't recall ever knowing it by the name Crazy Man's Handcuffs back then, but near as I can recall, it seems that it had only been titled "penetrating bands", or something more or less equally prosaic, in whatever source I had originally learned it from. While I guess it may qualify as a sort of "trivia" question, just out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know the origin of the CMH name for it? |

My first encounter with it as "CMH" was with Ammar back in the 80's.

Thanks. Perhaps he popularized that name for it then. (I first learned the effect sometime in the late 70's, I think. As I said, I think it was in Tarbell 7)

Pentrating Bands first appeared in Elastrix with no credit.
Then appeaed in Tarbell #7 with no credit. This was originated by Arthur Setterington with later improvements by Herb Zarrow. Michael Ammar put out his version which he called Crazy Mans Handcuffs. This is the title that stuck to the effect. Linking back in has a broad history also. Herb Zarrow was seen in the late 60's linking back in by transfering to the second finger to grab around with the first finger. Loren Michaels,Scott Hitchcock, Mark Fitzgarald, Nabil Muraday and Myself all have versions of relinking. The fact that David Copperfield chose to include this on is TV special speaks volumes. It's a great effect. I have a version coming out soon in the not to distant future. Look forward to Crazy Joe's Handcuff's! It's gonna Drive you Bonkers! Joe Rindfleisch

Thanks for the rather thorough background and further info. Now that you've reminded me, I have Elastrix too, but I had Tarbell 7 earlier and I was pretty sure that's where I first ran across it. Can't wait til my move is complete and I can unpack my books again, as it's frustrating trying to search my memory when reminded of things here after such a long hiatus from magic without being able to consult my own library.

Joe
Why don't you tell us more about your new stuff? Vince You are talking about tricks that you never showed me, why don't you publish your new stuff. It is my opinion that Joe, Vinny, and Vince are the rubber band brain trust.

Joe's new offerings are gonna drive your audiences crazy. "Crazy Joe's Handcuffs" is killer stuff, then just when you think it can't get any better, you've got "Jumper" Keep your eye peeled for this release.
