3 effects Blake? Get real...How about the snow storm and the way you copy his patter for the illusion? You may say "it was my way of keeping Christmas alive the whole year" DC says "it was my way of keeping the magic alive" I could keep going, but you are simply to immature to realize how truly wrong you are. You also copied the way he picks his audience members with the beach balls. Yes, some things in magic are repeated, but geez, think of something original. You're a poser! By the way, the oufit is a complete replica as well...ridiculous

Who cares what he does? Is it really affecting anything you do? I mean geez, get over it and get a life and leave the poor kid alone. Obviously he doesn't care, then why should you? DC does not use beach balls. So how do you think magicians should get audience participation? Seeing how DC has used them all. Blake is doing shows, the audience likes the effects (you can tell by the applause), and he does them well. I can care less what a bunch of internet magic bloggers think. I am pretty sure Blake thinks the same as I do. As for the knock offs, the spiker is legally made (if it were not they would have been shut down), am I right? Oh then you have your precious ethics, well to each their own. To set the record straight, I use only props from the original builder and have original acts, so don't go there about the ethics with me. I am just saying that everyone has different ideas and thoughts about ethics. Is there anything else that we can talk about on the Café instead of witch hunts? How about magic and how we can use our magic to entertain. I have seen many magicians perform and all of them have used something from their predecessors. How many times have you heard "Where are you from? . . . Sorry?. . .No I heard you the first time, I am just sorry." I can tell you that and other sayings are used way too much. Leave the poor kid alone. There are 3 types of people on this tread, 1) those who are trying to help, 2)those who are jealous, and 3)those who are sick of all the time wasted on witch hunts. I fall into 3. If you call Blake a poser or something of the like then you fall into 2. People like Chezaday, and the working pros fall into 1. I said that I was going over to the Black Magic Group but I decided that I will do both because the Café is really a good asset to those who need help.

BYUDAD,
How come it is okay for a 'kid' to copy people and use unauthorized props, but everyone else gets yelled at and shunned. What is good for one should be good for everyone. But that is not how it is, there are magicians that care about the others in the industry/art/whatever and make the right decisions on what props are the best and look the best. Those are the ones who's act will grow, as will their reputation. Those that copy others will level off somewhere and can't go further. Why don't you perform DC's routines? Why don't you use knock offs? I seriously doubt anyone here is jealous.

I don't know if BYUDAD is saying anyone is jealous of his quality of props or performance..., rather jealous that he is performing in general (whether its 20 or 200), and actually isn't a bad performer. Don't get me wrong, I don't think its right to copy the exact routine as he has done, but honestly, what BYUDAD is saying - and I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, or even just this thread, just talking generally, is that there are people who are genuinely trying to help - then, they're people who 'trying to help' but have a hidden agenda (whatever it may be).
Clearly Blake is not responding well to everyone, one day he will get it (hopefully), but if he doesn't, that's his loss - not yours ... perhaps DC will take some sort of action (highly doubt it, more likely just an email from some DC rep saying "stop that") .... but too often this place turns into an evil witch hunt, witch I will admit, I have been guilty of it too - but its wrong. And more often than not , whether people admit it or not, its because of jealousy - (not always, but often), in some way, shape or form....jealousy. I learn a lot from coming here and like it just as much as anyone, but sometimes things go way too far..., that is what BYUDAD is saying. At least that's my interpretation. So seriously, everyone made their point, tracked the 'witch' down, and burned them.... Perhaps we need Tim Drake's 30 days, or whatever it was..., 30 days of being positive. I can't recall exactly what it was..., either way it was clever. Just my .02c |

...i'm pretty sure DC does indeed use beach balls...i've seen pictures of them drying while hanging inside the unloaded semi-trucks after being spray painted silver...finding an original or unique or novel way of picking people from an audience is not hard, I have plenty of friends who throw stuff out into the audience to get people to come up and none of them are beach balls. I've seen Nerf guns and other nerf toys, paper planes, rolls of toilet paper, a bean-bag stuffed soft pillow thingy, and others...

I have used a beach "ball" (note singular) in my act now for 20 years. I got the idea from touring with my mentor while I was a kid learning the ropes of the biz b/c HE used a beach ball that he threw into the audience to get random people to help to prove no prearrangement. For about a year I decided to change it up, but I find a beach ball really works well for me b/c it's bright and colorful, easily seen, and no matter what, it won't hit like a rock with thrown into an audience.
Now granted...my ball isn't a cool looking silver ball like DC uses...but the Gymboree Ball get's the job done. http://s345.photobucket.com/albums/p377/......ls43.jpg

Sperris,
You are right. Blakes balls are not silver though. If you want to get technical then we should be after CreativeMagic.com. They make silver balls that you throw out to the audience. I just don't think it is bad to do this. I throw out a racketball for my ring in the racketball trick. I also use beach balls for my giant mental epic trick and Master Prediction System. Beach balls are a lot better than bowling balls right? Michael, You are right. I am just sick of all the witch hunts here on the Café. If someone takes offense to the jealousy thing then they have to work that out in their own way. All, Tell me how ripping this kid up one side and down the other is helping anyone out? There are those on this thread that have given great feedback that Blake should take and think about but there are those that just use this forum to cut people down. Matthew, You ask why I don't copy DC? I don't like the guy. Why would I copy someone that I don't look up to. There are some concepts I like that Rick Thomas does that I have used to make my own shows. I think all of us have been influenced one way or another by our magic heros. The youth today are a lot more creatively challenged then us older folk who had to learn magic out of books. I mean think about it, they are in the generation Xbox era. They watch more tv, use the computer and play more video games than we did as kids. What kind of impact do you think this has on them and their creativity. I know when I used my imagination reading the Lords of the Rings when I was a kid the whole place was a lot more different than what I saw in the movie. As a kid watching the movie then reading the book will not be able to get away from the way it looked in the movie. I think that this may be a reason for Blake's ways. Either way it is none of our business what he does. I don't care what anyone here on the Café does for their show. What good would it do? Why even care about it? I mean is it going to bring down the magic industry? Is it going to affect your shows? Is it going to take people from your shows? No! No! No! So lets try as Michael said have 30 days of politeness here on the Café. I am sure that it won't happen but it sure would be a big difference. BTW - Sperris, great job on tonights show. |

I have not watched the kids videos but I like to stop by this thread from time to time for amusement. Sounds like he has promise and I have no doubt he'll be a different person at 25 than he is at 15. As for his attitude - teenagers are supposed to be annoying. It is their job to annoy those older than them and he, in turn, will get his chance to be annoyed by those who come after him. I also would like to tip my hat to those posters who consistently have positive, helpful advice to offer. (You know who you are.) People are always threatening to leave this forum because of the negative stuff. Shame. There is a wealth of helpful info here and the great majority of posters are nice, helpful folks looking to improve magic. I think, also, that it is very easy to misinterpret peoples good intentions when you are reading internet chat. Maybe more use of the emoticons would help avoid misunderstandings. :wavey: And so, in the interest of adding something positive to the advice for young Mr. Blake may I suggest you read the "Books of Wonder" by Tommy Wonder when you can. And good luck. |

Some of you are simply ridiculous. If he is smart enough to know copying DC will help make money, he is also smart enough to realize it is WRONG to do so. It doesn't matter if you are 25 or 15. He has basically stolen 1/4 or so of DC's show. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU THAT PRAISE HIS STAGE PRESENCE? (You know who you are). The basic question is whether or not stealing another peron's material is wrong. If you answer "yes", than you shouldn't be encouraging "Fake Alexnder"

Hey! I couldn't care less about Blake and his thievery, I just want to know how come Dan gets to talk about dry humping on here and my innocent little joke about Phil Donahue on another thread gets yanked off in less than 24 hours!?! Oh sure, cut the big TV show guy some slack!
Hi Jeff. Love your act - one of the funniest ever! Now Blake is gonna be throwing shoes out into his audience. It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye though. |

Jeff Hobson is THE BEST!!!! His magic is easy to perform (who says good magic has to be hard???), very commercial, and very entertaining! I do The Balloon Bag in almost every show. It's great! I don't do Jeff's presentation as only HE can be him, just like I can only be me and only Blake can be himself.
Having spoken with Blake over the phone several times over the DC thing, I see a young man who is passionate about magic who is still trying to "find himself." It will happen and this thing will all blow over for him. Life will go on and the world will continue spinning... Here's hoping that everyone returns to their normal defcon level....

If he is trying to find himself, he needs to stop looking in SOMEONE ELSE! David Copperfield is David Copperfield, not Blake Alexander.

Give him time Matthew. He'll come around. I haven't spoken to Blake for quite a while now...but my "guess" is that he has seen the error of his ways. He does have some maturing to do as we all did when we were his age. You're not that far away from his age and I'm sure that you too have a little more maturing to do (I don't mean that as an insult...just a fact of life) as none of us settled into adult life by the time we were 20.
Blake has gotten r##ed pretty hard on this by the Café', other Forums, and by now, probably even DCs people. My guess is that he's learned his lesson. Let's leave the kid alone now and leave him to find himself. I have a feeling that he's doing that as we speak! = )

Let's face it...the kid has exceptional stage presence and skill for his age. What will he be like in 10 years. If Blake's talent continues to grow at his present rate AND he matures developing his own style, we'll all be eating our words while he laughs all the way to the bank.

Wow; Blake is wrong for what he did, but seriously, I agree with what a few other posters said, there is SO MUCH jealousy here, its not even funny.
Matthew: I read this whole thread top to bottom, all along you claim that you want to help him understand what he is doing; then you post a video of the kid performing his bird act and basically say he has no skill by posting a link to youtube - which is clearly putting him down. Obviously you have a problem with him, not because he copies DC (which is wrong and eventually he will see that) but because he clearly has something that he will hopefully build on (his own material) - so like I said, jealousy. You can say you are not jealous of him and I don't think you are jealous of him copying someone (who would be) but because he is out there working, performing and yes making some money (not for me to say whether he performs 200 shows a year or not...) - I'm not saying you don't work, perform ETC, but to me, it seems like there is a little more then just trying to 'point him in the right direction'. SlimmyJ: I didn't think it was bad at all - he has some work to do, but like I say, it wasn't bad at all. To be clear, I am not saying copying DC was right, it was VERY WRONG, but seriously - if you had half the potential he has at his age, I would eat my computer. I wouldn't be surprised in 10 years if he has a strong show and is performing professionally. Not saying he is the next big thing, but I do believe he has got something he can build on. Anyways, in closing - this thread is a joke. He took his lumps and now it should be closed. |
