I just saw Chris lecture and got to spend some time with him.
I loved his rings routine. It is a three ring routine that is interesting, entertaining, quick hitting and fooled a house full magicians. It is "in your face!" The rings link, and unlink, and you never see it actually happen. And he went around the room linking and unlinking in front of almost everyone. You know what is happening, and you just don't see it. He even had a guy hold a ring, and he linked his ring onto it, and you still couldn't see it. Lots of other good practical stuff in his lecture notes as well. Chris put two kids through college doing magic in NYC, and his lecture notes are titled something like; How you make $1500 a week doing street magic (or something like that.) Has anyone here seen him perform on the Street, or a the Buskers convention? BroDavid

BroDavid,
Where can we get his lecture notes? Where did you see him perform/lecture? Thanks. Jim

I was on the bill a year or so ago at SEAM with Chris (and before that at NYCAN in Syracuse, NY) and will certainly agree with BroDavid.
Chris' ring routine is absolutely flawless; in one instance, two rings link while the spectator holds one and it all happens about two inches from your eyes! BTW, his Miser's Dream with a bunch of kids is truly something to behold! |

Chris was at NEMCON last year. I agree with everything you say about him. He is an engaging guy, his ring routine rocked and his Miser's dream routine using the Sylvester Pitch was great.
I still haven't figured out how exactly to do his crash link with rings though.

Is his miser's dream also on the lecture notes? Is the linking ring interactive at all? Thanks.

James,
I have yet to read the lecture notes, and due to some late night sessioning the night before the lecture, I got up late and missed the first half of the lecture...bummer man.... But I made up later by getting to hang with him a bit. His rings are on DVD, and in his lecture notes. His notes contained a lot of stuff that you might not expect too, including the gimmick used in tricks like slo burn and Hundy 500, and the lecture notes publication date (he has been lecturing for a while..) predate either of those routines since the gimmick has been published for quite some time, but in spite of the notes beign a few years old, the material is extremely relevant. I met Chris at the International Battle of Magicians in Canton, Ohio. He lectured, did a brief show, and also will be perfroming tonight in the Grand Show. I bought the lecture notes and the DVD. And will try to watch the rings DVD tonight. Because now I am ready to put my ring routine together. For sheer elegance and beauty, I love the Cellini Rings, and just got to see meet him, and see him do them on Tuesday night in a lecture. But for smash mouth, in your face, up and over magic, I love Chris' Capehart's rings. What a great magic week it has been for me. I met Cellini, and got to ask him some questions, and then I got Chris's great street information and ring routine. James, I don't know (I havent tried and didn't ask..) if Chris has a web site where you might find more info. But if you cant find him that way, PM me, and I will send you his address and contact info BroDavid

I remember selling Chris' routine in the magic shops years ago (stars of magic). Does anyone know if he has changed it at all since its release 20 years ago?
Great routine. Matt |

It is my understanding that it is basically the same. He said in the lecture that this is the ring routine he has been doing for 20 years! And on the DVD he looks much different. There he had white hair and a white beard. And he isn't really quite that old, so I would say the video was shot when he had a whole different look which could have been a while ago.
I don't imagine any performer would go 20 years without changing a routine somewhat, but I also don't think he would throw away a good thing. And he was selling the Stars of Magic explanation of his ring routine. BroDavid

I have been performing Chris's ring routine from Stars of Magic for a while now and have been delighted with the reaction it gets. I have never seen Chris live but if he has a DVD available then it's going on my must have list. What is the title of the DVD, and is the ring routine on the DVD?

I met Chris at Al Cohen’s Magic Shop in Washington in the early 80’s. He was just stopping in. Al had several copies of Chris’ New Stars of Magic “Three Ring Routine” on the shelf and asked to show it. Chris did and all copies of the manuscript were sold (including one to me!).
I saw Chris at a convention about 20 years later and watched him do his three-ring routine. It was move for move the same! He has it so refined that he doesn’t mess with it.
The artist formally known as Mumblepeas!

The DVD is entitled
Chris Capehart's 3 Ring Routine Pretty snappy title eh? Anyway, I do no think it is distributed by anyone but him. (I could be wrong on this, but I have never seen it elsewhere...) You can contact him at http://www.chriscapehart.com His address, phone, and an email address are about all that is on the site, there is no product or ordering info, but with the contact info, you can probably get any other info you need. Thanks, BroDavid. I will also be interested in the lecture notes on street magic. Have you read them yet? How long are they? Does he talk about drawing a tip, etc, or more just about his routinees and show? Thanks.

James, the lecture notes talk about where to perfrom giving several cities, e.g NYC, CHI, LA, SF, Philly, DC, and New Orleans.
He gives some pretty specific, although quite brief, advice on where the good pitch are located in those cities. He talks a bit about drawing an edge. The text size is pretty big, but it takes only about 3 pages for most of the "How to do the Street" info, so it isn't - in depth. The notes are 25 pages long, and start with Transposition Card trick - two cards change places in the specs hands Six coins across - street style Six coins - one by one travel to the other hand. Four Ace Card Trick - aces from indiffeent cards Continuous Coin, the coin just keeps coming Color Changing Backs - cards change Ones to Fives (including pictures of how to make the gimmick which looks just like the ones used by Gregory Wilson, and Richard Sanders for their effects. His handling is different than theirs, but it is not bad.) Hands off , a card revelation where the magician never touches the deck. That is about it. The descriptions of "how to" is not particulary a revelation if you have read Cellini, or have the Art of Street Performing, but the notes have a couple of things that make them worth the $15 I paid at the lecture. So Bro. David are we going to see you perform the rings at this Saturday's meeting?

I can't yet.
My 12 inch rings are Klamm locking rings so they wont work for this routine, my 8 inch rings are too small, and my 16 inch rings is a set of only two. So I need to get a set of 3 - 10 or 12 Inchers to start practicing. I already hurt myself trying it with the 8 inch rings. So the performance will have to wait until I find a really good deal on rings of the right size. But don't worry Shadow, that wont keep me from making a fool of myself with some other new effects!!! BroDavid I got my 10" ring set, and over the past week, practicing like crazy, have had to stop doing the one (crash link variation called impossible link) move completely, for two different days, because I bruised a bone on my right hand too badly to practice that move. So my observation now is that 8" rings are not too small, you just have to get the knack of it, or no matter how big the rings, you will hurt yourself. And the bigger the rings, the more it hurts... But there are plenty of other moves and links that he shows, that don't hurt you, that I can keep working on my routine anyway, if I stay away from whacking my hand again. But when it works, and I am not grimacing in pain, it looks REALLY GOOD!!!! I saw a guy doing Shoot Ogawa's Ninja rings today, and he used the same crash link type of move! And with 4 inch rings, (He let me try them out) it really is easier. But although the whole Ninja routine was very nice, it just isn't big enough for me. ... BroDavid
