Just saw some more info in the news and thought it might be of interest.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,24949590-421,00.html

I had a go at trying to find somebody who could get a specimen. But no luck yet.

Unfortunately it is just a little to far away for me to go there my self at the moment but if there is still news about it the week after next I may be able to go check it out on my way up the coast.

Oh I also just found this news artical which is kind of cool.

We don't have any large preditors in australia let alone big cats so we do tend to get lots of spook storys about people out camping seeing big black mountaine lion cats. Apparently this guy has proof ?

Boy does this bring back memories - I grew up in Mundubbera, 15 miles from the Binjour Plateau where the Binjour Bear was reputed to roam.

Here is an interesting story about the 'bear' and other local legends.

http://www.warriors.egympie.com.au/gayndahbear.html

When I was a kid the different legends had morphed into one, and many people believed the Binjour Bear to be a big cat, a descendent of a panther from the great circus accident of 1959.

I don't remember ever hearing about the Jongari though(1 metre tall hairy people who supposedly lived alongside the Aboriginals.) Seems to be a story based more in the yearning for a tourist industry the area is so affected by.

Circuses didn't have much luck in that region. I remember in the late 60's/early seventies an elephant escaped from the circus, and it was all anyone talked about. We all checked our backyards first thing every morning and last thing every night in case he was bedded down with the chooks.

One morning the entire school was walked 2 miles out of town to where the highway bypassed the town - not for the elephant but to wave at Prince Charles who was attending school in Australia and on his way to holiday at a nearby station(ranch). Just ahead of the princes convoy came a truck carrying a female elephant brought in to lure the other from the bush. We mistakenly assumed it was the escapee and as poor elephant eared Charles swept by waving at our backs we cheered and chanted "They found the elephant".
