Hi There,
I was watching a wonderful DVD called 'Get Your Act Together'by Joanie Spina. On this DVD there were some short clips of Mark Kalin performing his billiard ball manipulations. Does anyone know if Mark has made this routine available to the magic community or if there is a DVD of him performing on the market? Thanks so much, Joel |

Joel, you'll find the Roy Benson routine set forth in great detail in "Roy Benson by Starlight" by Levent and Todd Karr, and the Alan Wakeling routine in "The Magic of Alan Wakeling" by Jim Steinmeyer.

Donal,
I bought the "Magic of Alan Wakeling" and love the routine. I loved it so much, I learned the routine and now perform it. Don't know if I do it as well as Mr. Wakeling but I love doing it. |

David, I'm with you. Between Mr. Benson and Mr. Walkeling, I developed a deep appreciation for why the BBs are much more magicial when performed as a two-handed routine.

Postscript: I enjoyed watching Mark Kalin do his BB routine on tonight's "Master of Illusion" episode. The experience wasn't as good as when I saw him perform the routine live at the Castle last year, but it was the next best thing.

I agree Donal. I love the routine and the way in which Mark does it. What I felt was lacking from the TV version as that they edited out his verbal intro to the piece. The way he introduces it is just as magical as the magic itself. It really becomes a personality piece for him and the combination of story and magic work together to draw you in to liking him and remembering the experience he is creating.
It is also a great lesson in focal point and pausing. Too many manipulators go too fast and never pause enough to allow the audience to react. Still others have movements in their acts that do not make any sense and the audience ends up losing focus. if you watch and study what Mark does, he pauses at the right times and also uses focal points very well as both magical entertainment but also as great misdirection. Kyle,
I just love Mark's ball routine but your right you lose the personal touch not hearing the set-up before the effect. Masters of Illussions only showed the effect so it took away the mental side. What do you think? Joseph Young

Totally agree. It was still good magic. However, I have seen him do this many times live. When done with the story line, it plays so much better as it plays on emotions and really draws the audience inwards. In a way the story is a powerful element of the routine he does.

Would you elaborate about what his story line is that goes with the routine? Thanks

It is hard to put into words as I do not want to try and even come close to what he says and does. However, it is a story of growing up and how he got started in magic. It is just done very well and really sets the tone for what you are about to see.
