Here's something to consider:
Have a version of your routine that you can do with any three cups. That way you can do it at any time. rules: cups can never touch each other balls never rest on the cups (no saddle) I figure having a small routine like this could be fruitful. I have one. It's a shorter version of my standard routine. Anyone else?

I use plastic (nesting) drinking cups and wads of paper towell impromptu quite a bit (or at least I did before everyone I knew got sick of watching me perform at parties!).
One can get a lot of mileage out of an improvised set of cups! |

Most of the Vernon routine would qualify. Right off the Gazzo video works too. Only one ball rests on each cup and only for the opening display. Balls gather from under the ends to the middle, (or ends, your choice). No three ball groups, cups only stack once and that can be eliminated as it has little to no impact on the routine except to position one ball for the next phase. Easily fixed with a minor adjustment.

All true DaveV but it's one thing to realize that ahead of time and go right into it, compared to trying to decide on the fly whether you can do it or not.
If I had not pre-thought about it and tried it out there's not a chance I would do it in an impromptu setting.

You're right. Many people forget that "impromptu" doesn't have to really mean impromptu. You still have to rehearse what you do so it seems improvised on the spot.

Uh . . .
Anybody look at the Vernon routine in the Stars of Magic ???? Newpaper rolled around glasses for the cups, sounds pretty impromptu to me. I believe it is hard to find when you're looking for an impromptu cups and balls routine because Vernon hid it from anyone looking for such a thing by calling it . . . The Impromptu Cups and Balls. :) Bruce Elliot's book The Classic Secrets of Magic is another good source. John Carney has a routine. David Williamson does it with grapes and teacups. Rezvani's routine out of The Magic of Rezvani. Rene Lavand's routine. KG |

Apart from the first two lines of the rhyme (first verse of three), I don't think this qualifies as the 3rd cup stacks on the middle cup (but maybe I have mis-interpreted the post!). James Prince's cups & balls at speed (menu of miracles 2) will qualify I think. The balls do individually rest on the top of individual cups at times, but this can be done with the balls on the table in front of the cup instead. Only 3 balls required. I have done this one impromptu with coffee mugs. I tried with light-weight vending machine cups, but found them hard work! |

Right you are puggo, it involves stacking.
Frank, I had never thought of the part about not resting a ball on the cups. I have used paper and Styrofoam cups and have a routine that works well, but have never thought about not being able to set a ball on the cup. You have me now reworking my little impromptu routine. Kent, you know what they say, "if you want to keep other magicians from learning a routine, just publish it! They'll never find it then." LOL!
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

Along the lines that you're talking about, I saw a guy (and for the life of me, I can't remember who) take 3 creamer cups and three small wads of napkin do an impromptu routine. Nothing fancy, but it definitely proved the power of simplicity.

This is an interesting thread.
And I think it's so funny that this discussion is going on right next to a thread about when we expect to get our multi-hundred-dollar fancy cups from RNT2 and Br**t-who-shall-not-be-named. |

Proving, once again, it isn't the props or the trick... it is one's ability as en entertainer and their long-time-study, and knowledge that matters.
To see the ultimate person of that calibre, you, if you ere lucky (as I was) to have spent time around Jay Marshall. He could do ANYTHING, ANY TIME, ANYWHERE...

This is a great thought-provoking topic. I, too, am going to apply myself in this direction. The performer that comes to my mind as a 'do-anything-anywhere' type of performer is one of my favorites (but a recent discovery of mine), Bob Read. He must have a clever C&B routine published somewhere. I love his routine with the glass, the newspaper and the little paper ball....

Sadly, Read is no longer among the living. Yes, he could do anything, anytime, anywhere. As could Jack Chanin, Ken Brooke and others.
I had a great experience years ago in France. Invited to a very special dinner at a 4-star restaurant in a small private dining room, I was asked by the host to do something. With nothing but what was on the table, and my shoes (I did the awful gag of producing one of my shoes on the finely fitted table) I did what Jay Marshall calls "Table Crap" (see the DVD from http://www.stevensmagic.com ) and it went so well it scared me! One of the attendees was the area Police Chief and a few days later he recognized me and helped me gain access in a really difficult situation. Magic paid big time there (I have another story where doing a bit of magic literally saved my life!!)

Mr Biro please, if not here, on another thread, how did magic save your life - or should I wait for your memoirs?! Respectfully, Charlie |

I was in the Army on the rifle range. A guy went crazy and he had some weird reason to kill me... he aimed the loaded rifle at me... a crowd circled us and I asked someone for a matchbook... the guy was confused and kept saying "I'm going to shoot you..."
I did the dopey little match penetration and he looked at it, lowered the rifle and a couple of guys jumped him and took it (and him) away.

And another time... I did a lot of shows at the Officer's Clubs. And when it came time to ship out to the battle zones in Korea, a Captain called me aside and said he wasn't going to include me that they needed a couple of guys in Europe. So, having gotten known by doing magic shows, I was sent to peaceful Europe and not to Korea where lots of the guys in our original outfit were killed.
