When people start speaking cryptic, it can get confusing. Especially to those of us mega dosing on cold meds... Tony |

Or just because in the past you had the bad luck of being ripped off ...
So, I fully understand your concerns (and my japanese friends understand that, too!) Better safe than sorry!

I enjoyed C & K's comments. They were really well thought out and they got me thinking about what the effect means to me. I responded: Quote:
Hmm.. I thought C&K's comments were a load of old twoddle. If describing something as twoddle shows a distinct lack of manners, then I guess I'll have to one myself down. Incidentally, you've just said that I talk an emmense amount of rubbish... http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=twoddle Other than my initial suggestion of twoddle... I've been nothing but well mannered. Happy Easter!

Davit,
Whenever I put something in my act, I look at it from the audience’s point of view. How will they enjoy the effect? There are questions I ask myself so that I can form a premise that will be compelling, believable, and enjoyable. Many magicians and mentalists turn their show/act into nothing more than an exposition or demonstration of showing a trick. HA! I know something you don’t know and you can’t figure out! This is not entertainment in my opinion. I agree that I want a method that is 100%. I do not agree that you must repeat it. It depends on the story or premise that you deliver with the effect. Max Maven had an effect in his show that was a 50/50 chance and through compelling scripting and drama made it an edge of your seat anticipation. Rick Maue also discusses the strengths that can be wrought with a 50/50 chance. I will agree that most people will opt for the repeating correct guess presentation. You said, “Keep it simple”. Well, yes, I agree, but the statement is somewhat ambiguous since you don’t explain what you mean. Presentations should be simple to grasp and understand. That does not mean that the work behind creating a simple presentation will always be . . . simple. Davit and Patrick, You both want challenging spectators. And, I think this is fine also long as you know why and know how to play with them without becoming the “I know something that you don’t know jerk”! When I read the original post by Mr. Crebar; he stated his problem was that his spectators will feel dumb. This is a common reaction to the “I know something you don’t know jerk” presentation. I gave thoughtful comments that might help him discover how he wants to present this piece. There is more ways to present this piece than simply challenging the spectator to beat you at your game. I directed Mr. Crebar to Jason Alexander’s act. In his act a story is the vehicle for the effect and the challenge aspect to the spectator on stage is minimal. I simply want to point out that there are more ways to present this effect other than the simplistic guess which hand it is in because I can read your tells. I think this is a legitimate presentation but a rather uncreative one. On top of all of that I pointed out that if you perform this effect enough you will find that at some point the spectator will not put it in either hand. (I am curious how Patrick handles that one) This almost always happens when you put the spectator in the challenge mode, but rarely happens when you present the effect without a direct challenge to the spectator. I suggest that we should think about how our audience will view us or the effect through our presentation or ask “what is the motivation to show them this effect”, I believe these strong, justifiable questions that improve our show and our persona. The question, why do we need to show them this? Keeps us from becoming pompous, overbearing entertainers that simply fool them because we can. Christian

Tony,
Thanks on finding the Jason A reference. You must read/study way too much, you seem to constantly be able to find these little known tidbits. And on that note, Tony is correct when he says the Reel Magic DVD's are excellent. Kozmo does an excellent job in creating these gems and always seems to get compelling personalities on the cover . . . so to speak. Christian

This seems to be a knack for some folks. My daughter is very good with a gaffless version she's been performing since she was 10 or so.
I prefer a sure thing, especially in questionable locations.

I think Cristain is dead on! I have seen this effect numerous times including
Prevaricator and with 50/50 results (not impressive). I was at the Mindvention when Jason Alexander performed his version live and it was very, very good. This was not because of the trick itself, but mostly because of his excellent story telling and superb acting skills. Christain performs Magic all over the United States professionally and knows what works in the real world, he might have some insight others would want to learn from (including me). When corporations pay for magic/entertainment, they don't want near misses they want professionals who can perform acts that work. Just my experience and opinion!!!

I cannot reinterate enough that when I perform this effect I get nothing but huge interest, laughs and wonderful interaction from my audience. Most people are fascinated by how people can read tells so accurately and find the whole demonstration engaging.
Like all mentalism routines, it's not so much about the trick, it's about the performers persona, charisma, and ability to hold an audience. Andrew |

Seems that guys like Derren Brown may actually expose certain methods during their performance to bolster the NLP type of demonstration they say they are using. They could expose certain ideas behind Patrick and TT2's methods while using a relic type prop. Just as many expose Fulves' method, some day yours could be on the auction block of paid performances.
I don't like thinking that way, but I see it coming.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.
