No flowers here - just suggesting that you go after the right people if you want answers and also that you might not like some of those answers.
As to the moral calculus of causing some folks suffering in the cause of attempting to prevent others from suffering - there are some presuppositions worth challenging there like: 1) how can you be sure the person you are hurting has the data you need? 2) even if they gave you what data they had how can you be sure that would prevent the event you are attempting to stop? Then we get to the slippery slope issue: At what count of others does your moral calculus hold that such is not acceptable - say hurting a hundred people to save a thousand? how about hurting a million to save ten million? Now considering that over time two people can produce millions - why not condone hurting a few millions to prevent harm to billions? Now let's attenuate the cause - say finding a set of car keys you dropped in a parking lot. You look and don't see them. So as far as some are concerned it's just fine and dandy to start torturing till someone confesses to where you lost your car keys? Eventually someone must have seen them - right? And last - let's look at how this kind of thinking relates to the golden rule. Do you feel it's ethical to be tortured because someone knows for sure you are going to say something insulting to their religion and doing so is (under their law) an offense punishable by death - so by torturing you they prevent you from offending millions. Okay let's say you have a gun. Is it then acceptable to use torture on you and your family to protect the lives and peace of those whom you might well threaten in actions if not by mere dint of having the gun? These are not flowery or casual questions. If you don't like the standard applied to yourself and your loved ones perhaps it is not such a good thing to apply to others. But go ahead and get people in your car and see if you can get something out of them using torture. The current notion of degrees of separation has it that you should be able to get to your boogie man in six or so people. I hope you understand that I don't want such used on me and so can't condone using such practices upon others. To that end I have suggested alternative methods and approaches. Details in private - still not nice to discuss grown up tactics around children.

Stop changing the subject you two.

I'm sure I sound shallow, but I'm still waiting for the inevitable computer geek girl cat fight (Chloe v. Janis). If there is any justice in the world, that will be a 2 hour episode.

Of course torture is necessary--we wouldn't have been able to catch Osama without it.

These threads are kind of torture, but I inflict it on myself. Next I'm going to water board myself. Then paper cut myself and soak in lemon juice, after that Batteries, cables, and my own testicles!

Hope that cleared up some of the confusion.24 is one of the best shows on tv probibly on a par with Prison Break. Thanks Dan

This season of 24 looks great so far. As for the torture thing BFD, it's a show, but, at least everyone leaves without their head being cut off with a dull knife. Kill terrorist and be done with them; or better yet ... capture, tag, release, track, then kill them when they hook up with more of their confederacy of dunces. BOOM!
POOF!
