I just recently (this morning, actually) purchased some items from the Blackstone Collection...I bought 27 pieces, including a scarce one-page signed letter from Blackstone (1950s); two autographed sentiments, one bearing a hand-drawn (by Blackstone) caricature of Blackstone; a signed theatre handbill/Christmas Card; eight different cue and prop sheets; a three-page radio script; a real photo postcard; two complimentary passes (one signed); several clippings; color letterhead; and more. Most of this stuff is 1930s-40s). I also got a one-page TLS of Harry Blackstone, Jr. and a convention badge signed and inscribed by Blackstone, Jr.
I also bought some stuff from Henning Collection, too...Old programs, many of them signed, a couple of old photos, signed, theater programs, convention badges, and such. I wanted to get a few more Houdini items, but most of them were programs and playbills, and they're not that rare. Chung Ling Soo's chinese fan he used on stage at the time of his death sold at this auction...brought in $3200.00!!! That's a steal..I thought it would've gone for more than that. I believe Copperfield picked up that litle gem. Now I have to find space for it all. Ugh! |

Wow !!, neat stuff !!
With items like those I'm sure you won't have to hard of a few spots to display some of it. Bob. |

Yeah...you'd think that would be the case, however, my display shelves are full, the walls in my office/magic room are full. I may have to put some of it up, display the new stuff and rotate it every now and then.

I picked-up some of the Houdini programs, so that works for me. Most of the items, including the Houdini items, seemed to bring decent prices. I didn't see the whole auction, but it didn't look-like that there was anything that went off the charts. Many items seemed very reasonable compared to previous auctions.

There were a few photographs that I thought went a little too high. They were original photos but had no signature or anything. One went for almost $2000. I think there were 4 items that didn't get bids at all. Out of almost 200+ items, that wasn't too bad. Did you get the 3 Houdini programs that were sold together? I think one of them was purple or blue... I bid once on those, but didn't really bother with them. I have way too much Houdini items..from programs to letters to a pair of his cuffs and one of his straitjackets. It'sll be a while before I buy any Houdiniana. I needed to broaden my collection a little. All I all, I thought it was a pretty good auction. I think the next one will be in July...I think

No, they were two seperate lots of programs. I used to have the general magic collection too, but focus only on Houdini and related items these days. It's more than enough to keep me busy and broke.

I completely understand about the broke part. Ironic..I collected Houdiniana for years and now expanding to others...You collected general magic and now focusing on Houdini. Lol. That's funny.

I think I always collected Houdini. It's when I didn't find anything at the magic conventions etc. in Houdini, I had to come home with something. That led to about 5,000 books. When the ceiling cracked in my old house, I knew it was time to do something. I put the heavy hitting material in Swanns years ago and sold or traded the rest( most of it).
The postcard with Houdini in a suit with his hands in his pockets seemed to attract some good bidding. I remember buying a signed one for $275.00 and saying to myself "Are you nuts?".

Lol. I know what you mean. I bought a pair of his handcuffs for almost $900 and one of his straitjackets for $6500....That one almost caused a divorce...not really, but the wife was NOT a happy camper. I don't have near the amount of books you do, but I do have a few very old ones and some very rare. I'm getting more and more into collecting original posters now, and personal letters.

Well I'm looking for his pitchbooks or catalogs. I have one of his 3 in 1 posters that I would trade for pitchbooks, catalogs or ephemera. OR if you have anything for sale or trade, I'm interested in hearing about it.

I'm always amazed at what some of Uncle Harry's stuff goes for. I've seen it from about $150 to $2000 for basically identical items in similar condition. I have quite a bit which he gave to me in my misspent youth. Fortunately I had to the presence of mind to hang on to it and preserve it well. He signed a lot of stuff and amazingly a lot of it is still in circulation. I've seen a few forgeries, but not many. Some of his actual equipment if it can be documented goes for a pretty penny. I do have a birdcage made by Uncle Pete, that Uncle Pete gave me, but I don't know if Uncle Harry ever used it in his act.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

I had a Blackstone table still in its' orange crate. The table looked-like a piece of furniture. It had a compartment on the table top that looked-like it was used to vanishing something of a large size. I traded it away for a Houdini window card and Hardeen poster.

I got my invoice. Paid it yeterday. I haven't seen a prices realized list yet. They sent me an invoice in my email like 3 times. I caled them yesterday and paid the invoice. My stuff should be shipping out today or tomorrow..and they're sending it Priority Mail. He said they may send it by FedEx...He wasn't really sure...But they KNEW it was going to cost $25.00 for shipping!! That seems a little much.
