I am working on My Dr. of Ministry at Seminary and my research is on the relationship between magic and religion throughout history. I now need to do some serious research on the history and development in the field of Gospel Magic and wonder if any of you out there know of any good sources to check out. You can respond here, PM me, or e-mail directly to revmike@ptd.net.

I would appreciate all the input I can get. I have already contacted some of the major Gospel performers today for the contemporary piece but I also need to trace the origins.

Thank you.

M. Reist

Hey Rev mike,

here is some inof for you. I am sure if you do a search in the library on online you shoudl find info aobut his.

I myself Have been performing gospel magic for over 2 decades all through outhte country. I lecture and teach at many conventions each year some of them secular and some christian.
I wil be in Ohio at a christian magic covention in april.

any way here is soem info.

this guy invented what we call today "gospel magic"
The first known instance of Gospel Magic is attributed to St. Don Bosco, he was an Italian priest born in Becchi, Castelnuovo d'Asti, Piedmont, who used magic tricks to catechize the children to whom he ministered. He is particularly known for a trick where he turned three short ropes into a single long rope to demonstrate the concept of the Trinity, ala professors nightmare.

hope this helps.

if you would like any other info let me know.

David Kaye's book gives a history of Gospel magic here in the United States...highly recommended reading for children's performers.
