I am looking for plans for the vertical asrah. Would anyone be willing to point me in the right direction? Thanks a million!

There is only one vertical asrah that comes to mind and that is David Copperfield's. It was created by David and Don Wayne. No other legit versions have been authorized to my knowledge.

The basic effect is called Mascot Moth originated by David Devant.
If I'm right, David Copperfield got his inspiration from this illusion for his "After Hours" vertical levitation. Oliver. |

Mascot moth has a extremely complicated method that is quite different from the asrah. you can learn more about it in steinmeyer's book art and artifice. The only modern performance of mascot moth I am aware of was in merlin with doug henning on broadway.

It was also recreated a few years ago for the History on Magic Conference.

I think Lance Burton does a version of the mascot moth in his show... For a vertical ashra just make a head and shoulder frame out of mesh wire, sure that could do the job.

The Mascot Moth was a vanish in full view, she did not float. Yes Doug did it in Merlin. Being with Lance alot, he does the vanish, but the cape and hood remain, and he tosses it away, In the Moth everything vanishes, inculding the robes.

I have seen the Mascot Moth performed at the LA History conference. It is a very tedious and tricky illusion to perform. As Rai said, the girl and the costume vanishes. It is somewhat roughly described in the Goldston books (It might be the Exclusive Magic Secrets).
The Standing Asrah was first presented I believe by Arnold Debiere. It also is described in one of the Goldston books. Norm Neilsen I believe made one at one time. It is another complicated effect to dependably present. Lance's version is one of the most practical to date and much simpler. I have worked it with people without the use of a stage T**p. But it does take a full sized stage with curtains to pull it off. Lance's is not a Mascot Moth. There are a lot of ideas in old Goldston books. The methods are not always accurate and often need updating. But they can get you thinking. Richard

This is an asrah not a standing Asrah. There is a big difference.

Thank you for your help and comments. I contacted Stevens to inquire if the book they sell "the complete book on asrah By Dr. Scandia" had plans and if he could direct me to where I could get some. He couldn't help.
I have found that if I use just the head and shoulders of an asrah form, I can't place it over my assistant while she faces the audiance so you can see her with the cloth on her head. Also if I cover her in the standard way, I will still need to switch the form for her and you can't see "her" with the cloth on her which is not what I want I am also finding that the form tips when it is rising and I am trying not to use a counter weight. Perhaps a bit more patience and testing on my part will result in the effect I want. As a matter of fact, as I am writing this, I came up with another idea. Thanks again for your thoughts and if anyone else has other suggestions, please let me know. Bruce |

I would join the conjuring arts group and do a search then on Ask Alexander. It is worth the $95 a year to join for the access of materials to get.

There are a couple of spookshow ghost effects that, for all intents and purposes, are a vertical asrah.
Also, Siegfried and Roy performed the Mascot Moth to vanish the Evil Queen and caused her to reappear in a large aquarium. |

Also, Davids Asrah moved while it was in the air. Giving the appearance of the girl moving her arms.
This one little piece of apparatus must be very complex. |

The moving arm bit was done by Thurston, and quite a few others who copied him. You can find the details in "The Thruston Asrah" The notes sold for about $10.00 years ago by Abbotts, You could call Greg and see if they still carry them. I know I have it somewhere in my files.
