Corinda's "Thirteen Steps..." (step 9) has a method that may suit.

Well...needs to be without touch...so Corindas don't work.

And there are electronic versions too for a few hundered bucks... but the material in Seance and the like is much less expensive but you need good timing!

Dr Spektor is right about that. I was experimenting with the methods in Seance and thought of this issue. I then came to a realization, if a spirit was really in the room and we really had no control over the spirit, we don't know when the candle will go out. That little surprise is very interesting. If it happened at the perfect time....maybe WE had something to do with it? Just a random thought I had to make myself not worry so much about the timing. I would say, let it burn longer than shorter. Better for the suspense.

Borodin's Final Curtain also has a VERY cheap method of making a self extinguishing candle. Requires a bit of tinkering to set up but once you've got the hang of it, it's quite simple and very effective.

There is a method described in the "Bizarre Bazaar/ Secret Sarcophagus" section of The Magic Nook Forum on my site. You'll need a password, but otherwise it's free. Just mention that you came here from this thread so I can issue you a password once you get to the Magic Nook Forum. The candle lights itself and extinguishes itself on "command" and can do so repeatedly without electronics.

The Bigger Book of Boo has methods for self-extinguishing and bleeding candles. They will require a bit of practise and timing, but are very simple.

Best low-tech solution is the Borodin tea-light method that Billy mentions above. High tech? I believe my own 1 of 2 House of Darkness candles designed by evil genius Roni Shachnaey - stops at the press of a button, leaves a visible, smoking wick and smells like a candle ought to! (OK so I'm gloating - sorry!) S

If one is willing to wait long enough, any candle will self extinguish.
That being said, I'm partial to TEBIII's version in the Bigger Book of Boo. But then, I'm not too picky about timing and I like making stuff. I AM, however, intrigued by docsteve's gloat.

As of tonight I'm off work 2 weeks with a 2 night run at saltburn theatre to round off a nice break from the day job. I have a presentation for doug's paw which I hope to video over this time which involves the candle too. Maybe I can inflame interest?

I'll do some video footage this week I hope, all being well. As for Saltburn Brother KOTAH, I hope so! I have been very quiet for 6 months since switching jobs last December, and after my 'Winter blues'. (I also to hope to finally finish "Hung Up On Ropes", which has been my 'daily' project for the last 4 weeks, following along, rope in hand - I'm absolutely, thoroughly enjoying it, and learning an area of magic that, for me, started and ended at "professor's Nightmare")
