My wife, son, the next door neighbor, and her son, and daughter, are addicted. I played an earlier version for a while that ran on the Game Cube. My house ended up with cockroaches! My son has a Wii now, and Animal Crossing City Folk. I have not played that.
My wife likes it because the characters are cute. It is a brilliantly conceived, and written game. I think if they had made everything more realistic, it would be less popular. Many guys won't play it, because it's cute, and there is no gratuitous sex, or violence - no car chases, explosions, etc. From watching my wife and son collect objects, go fishing, attend fireworks, attend K.K. concerts, and buy, and sell, things, sometimes buying, and selling for a profit, getting houses, furnishing the house, interacting with other characters, etc., I can see where the game is definitely cool. I prefer first person shooters! I am not a violent person, I just like to kill, kill, kill, KILL (falls out of chair in emotional fit). I don't play it, at least not yet. My wife and son are bugging me to join. I'll probably break down, and end up with cockroaches in my house again, which is what happens if you don't take care of it, i.e. abandon it for too long a time. Then, you have to go in and stomp them all until they're gone, which takes time, because they run under items. Of course, being a guy, my house will be mostly empty. The fishing sounds ok though. One very cool feature is that you can, with their permission, enter someone else's town over the Internet, and send them both mail, and give them items. My wife, and son, have both done this with the neighbors. I suggested a version of Animal Crossing City Folk to my son, where you fight the other characters with weapons!
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Don't know what it is -- but I am addicted to this game. Ran the risk of having it sink my business!!
