Have you ever done something, and straight after you have regretted it? You realised in hindsight that you should never have done it because it was plain wrong?
Did you know that the Devils greatest trick is to get people to do his bidding? He can manipulate a persons soul, get them to do what his evil mind wants him to do whenever or wherever he wishes. Humour me and allow me to show you, say for example this coin is a persons soul, an object with hopes and dreams. As I hold this solid object over this upturned pentagram, the known symbol for the ultimate evil, it melts and allows me to bend, twist, and manipulate it as if it was rubber. Just as the devil does to ones soul, and when finshed using you he just drops you to the floor. The remains of a man left twisted and warped. Thought I would share this with you. It is a bizarre routine for the silver shifter I came up with when I was bored. |

BLOODY *&*&%#!!!!! Will people PLEASE quit putting the so-called "inverted" pentagram out as a Satanic symbol!!! It is a legitimate symbol for, among other things, the Masonic Women's organization the Order of the Eastern Star, a second degree Initiate of several forms of Wicca and is the centerpiece of the Medal of Honor (US). A TRUE Satanic symbol, dating from the days of the Hellfire Club and other fun groups, is an inverted CROSS! Keep your bloody hands off of our symbols, please! And quit playing the stereotype game. If you are going to reference a specific religion in your presentation, at least GET IT RIGHT! Wiccans and members of the Order of the Eastern Star have, for DECADES, tried to fight this incorrect useage of the symbol and to little avail. Please - if you are going to slam a religion - and Satanism and the Wiccan religions are according to the US Military Chaplain's Manual (suppliment), or are going to use another religion's symbols (the Wiccan pentagram, for example), at least use the right symbol with the right religion. As a Wiccan, all I can ask is - "would you do this routine changing the symbol to a Star of David and the religion to Judaism?" If you did, you wouldn't be working anywhere very long, that's certain. So please, use the right symbol if you are going to go that route. Mixing people up with the wrong symbols is counterproductive and, frankly, bigoted. <rant mode: OFF> Sorry, folks, but I have spent a good amount of time debunking the whole "international satanic conspiracy thing" in law enforcement and psychological systems for decades and, as a Wiccan Priest, have a bit of a hot button about this issue. Sorry if it was a little heavy-handed, but I meant every word of it. Sincerely, Lee Darrow, C.Ht. http://www.ledarrow.com

Aside from the slander of a religious symbol proposed, you might have missed the BIG bad on that post.
The notion of the performer doing sympathetic magic on the soul of the spectator via the coin. Know them by their acts... Any comments comparing this issue to the one raised in 'The Screwtape Letters' ?

Many symbols, like the pentagram, star of david / solomon etc. are used in multiple religions in multiple contexts so there use in magic is a tad disrespectful. However, no one set of people "own" any particular symbol.
Always err on the side of respect for others, i.e. if you use religious symbolism, only ever use it in a positive way in the correct context for the right people. However, if satanists believed in what most people assume to be the christian devil (which they don't) they wouldn't use an inverted crucifix, or a pentagram. Doing so in front of me would merely show me your ignorance, not a good impression to leave with an audience? |

Under the trite story and confused symbolism of the original post is an interesting idea and use for the Silver Shifter.
There are not many sympathetic magic type effects done with coins. The word-picture of the coin /soul as getting manipulated and stretched and twisted resonates. Somewhere between what David Roth did with silly puty and the routine as first posted is someting VERY strong. No clear image or words for it yet. Just a feeling that it's there.

Trying to remember that symbols mean different things in different regions/religions/cultures can turn into a lifelong task. The daily exploitation of symbols surrounds us in all of the media we are confronted with, from the kind we pay for in the form of time and tv or movies/magazines/the net, to the kind we are barely aware of-street signs, shapes/colors, etc. I personally know of a family who encountered neighbors, in the last decade (1990'S) where the woman next door, on finding out the family was Jewish, informed the parents that she thought the doctors did a wonderful job! When my friends asked what whe mean, the neighbor woman replied "why-removing their horns," it seems her particular current religious beleifs taught her that Jews are born with horns like the devil(something about refusing to acknowledge someone for something) and that many families have them surgically removed at birth, or bris! Stereotypes! you bet, every day and everywhere. Has no one taken up the call to get magicians to stop waving the "wand" about so casually? In some religions, it is a sacred tool.
Are there ways to correct the errors? I think so, through time, education, and understanding. If the idea of using symbols in a specific context in the performance of our magic art, especially in the work of bizarre, then there are deeper problems that need to be addressed. While I do really understand the need to try and keep things authentic and beleivable (in this day and age of cynics, a very hard task) I agree with what I was told regarding the HOPI actions that when making a Kachina figure, they are never made 100% accurate or perfect, for to do so would be to call forth the actual spirit of the Kachina, and that might not be a good thing! As a routine, I think the reference used might not be MY particular style, but the IDEA is wonderful from a Bizarre perspective. I might consider a similar effect or outcome in relation to Loki, or another trickster figure who bends and manipulates the world around themself, whether the object be people, the truth, etc. Kay

Regarding symbolism:
If you want a symbol before which men's souls twist and contort, consider the dollar sign (greed presentation). If you want a symbol before which our mortal body becomes inconsequential, consider a cross (gospel presentation). If you want a symbol before which our thoughts bend upon themselves and lose all sense of logic, consider the hemp leaf (drug presentation). Nice visual idea, Lyndonwebb. Best, Neil P.S. to Lee: Funny thing. When I held a quarter over a Star of David, it turned into a dollar. Unfortunately, it was immediately followed by a donation request from the JDL.

Instead of abusing a familiar symbol, devising your own magical symbol would be more powerful and perhaps if you can "sell it" have more believeability...?

Thanks everyone for jumping on the bandwagon on this issue.
Honestly, I think the routine has some VERY good points about it - twisting of ideals and the like (perhaps an Elephant for those of us in the USA might be a good symbol for that - just kidding!). My ONLY complaint was with the misuse of the pentagram as a symbol for "the Ultimate evil." As a routine, I found it a VERY impressive approach, which, I am sure, would resonate with an audience. Especially if done as an example of what happened to someone like Faust, not a member of the audience, for reasons stated by another poster, above. Personally, I used the Magick Circle, drawn three times, concentrically, in my routine Thrice Drawn circle back in an old issue of Invocation for number of resons - it was a demonstration in miniature of a Spell of Protection AND it was a way to INSURE that coneone would write the information where I wanted them to on the paper. By using actual bits of Wiccan ritual method, the routine rang true for my audiences and, when I did it at a MerryMeet, the national convention of the Covenant of the Goddess, years ago (an international ecumenical organization for Wiccan and neo-pagan groups), it played VERY big indeed. Perhaps the routine's presentation could be altered so as not to use ANY symbol for a focus, but might use something else to infuse the object with the "corrupting influences" that plays so very well. Thanks again, all, for not taking my post as a flame or a troll. It's pretty rare that I get up on my soapbox on a topic like this, and I appreciate the responses from all concerend. To close - the routine, with some very minor modifications, is a killer! Great thinking on this effect! Honestly you could do that for along time, many, many, performances, before ANYBODY noticed that your "whatever" you used was the wrong for "whatever" religion. Love Neil's idea though. A good way to avoid the problems mentioned.

I had actually forgotten all about this post and I wish I still had.
All the ranting and raving about...NOTHING it doesn't matter what symbol you use. I just happened to use the inverted pentagram because as I was sat there I looked up and saw The Satanic Bible by Anton Levey and it has one on it. I don't actually use the routine as I don't like the silver shifter(personal view), but I just thought of it as I was looking through a box of magic. ANYWAY I THOUGHT EVERYTHING HAS AN OPPOSITE. Thanx to all who read this and saw it for all it was worth. |

How sad to read that some members of the Café get possesed by ultimate evil and feel it 'nothing' to inject great insult under guise of a minor offering.
Sympathetic magic routines have their place. As does our respect for the symbols and tools of each other's religions / beliefs.
