Yeah, Texas Sports. Always the same, easy to stereotype..... <chuckle>
Yes, the coach got fired. Essentially, he published an online essay about his feelings regarding the game, which was at odds with the school's philosophy. And so he was fired. There was also a story recently of a Texas football coach (also coaching at a private christian school) whose opponent was a school that wouldn't have many fans in the stands cheering for them (there's more to it than that). The coach sent an email to the parents of his own team explaining the situation, and asking for some folks to volunteer to sit in the opposing sides bleachers and cheer for their kids, provide a banner to run through, etc.... Apparently it was met with a lot of success and good feelings. So much for regional stereotyping. On another note.... Here is a clip of a guy named Jake Porter, a young man with a significant mental disability. He loved football, and being with his team mates. Near the end of the game (a blowout - in the other team's favor), Jake's coach called time out and told the opposing coach that he was going to give Jake the ball so he could have a carry, and that Jake would kneel down. The opposing coach said, "No, I want him to score." And so it happened. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrjASG1rJ3U Some people look at this video and call it condescending, etc.... Others hear about the joy that Jake had in scoring the touchdown, and read the interview with his mother, who was in the stands, crying, unable to contain her emotion at the (so she said) beautiful thing that was done for her son....just because someone cared. Interesting how something like this can make some people scoff, and others cry.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

The Jake Porter story is wonderful, but an exceptional situation. One coach requested, and received, cooperation in making a young man's life a little richer. It was a good faith request, and was answered in kind.
I already put my comments in the other thread, but I will add this: having coached women's softball for many years, I would never have racked up a huge shutout against a poor team. I would have instead used the opportunity to give my less experienced players some much needed game time. So the 100-0 victory is odd, I guess. But I can think of at least one team I would have gladly beaten 200-0, and the only reason I would have put weak players in would have been to extend the humiliation. I hated that team so much that I wouldn't have stopped until those girls ate their gloves and swallowed their bats and promised to take up cheerleading in their next lives. |

A little more about the Texas story, with some comments from other coaches who have led their teams to blowouts in the past:
