I never felt so ripped off. The lackluster Copperfield show in Orlando had none of the impact people always talked about. The 8:30 show started at 8:50, it included over 25 minutes of video footage, and very poor staging, sound and impact.
What's up with that? Any comments. If I wanted to watch videos of a flaming straight jacket, I'd download youtube and save $65. Virtually no assistants and no female assistants at all, no costumes, pretty much a mechanical show with 4 illusions and some of his stock fillers. The show ended at 10 after 10.

I don't remember seeing any girls the last time I saw him live. But since he added The Fan back into the mix, does he go through it himself?

Yes, in Germany his show also was poor in the last years. Many videos, mostly old illusions, and the price of the ticket EUR 185,00....

Yes Copperfield shows of old were much better. But the crowd still loved him and at the end of the day, that was what it was all about. I was at the 8:30 last night also.

The video aspect was what really irked me.
From any perspective, if you do an appearing rose after floating a paper ball close up, and it is being done to the side of the audience in low level lighting but being shown live feed on the )not so big) screen, THAT is the same as watching TV. If you build up the fact that you are known for escapes, and then show the entire straight jacket escape on video, and finish it just to take a bow, THAT is the same as watching youtube (I fully expected him to do an escape after the video. Highlites, Fan illusion (badly done), appearing car, very mechanical looking like a giant disney ride, appearing motorcycle (done on stage and not in the audience platform), Vanishing audience members, and the body squeeze effect. All were lackluster in movement, staging, and enthusiasm. As an educated observer, I am angry at what I missed and knew that he did years ago. But, what he did was technically similar modus apparendi. The fact that the audience liked it only meant that they just don't know what they missed, ignorance is bliss. Perfomance level, David phoned this one in, it had the depth and excitement of watching tv on a small screen. I will spend my money on magic conventions from now on rather than go to the public show. When I do a show, I sweat, I put out, and I expect the same from a vetted entertainer.

Let me just say that I'm a HUGE Copperfield fan. I grew up watching his shows and I've seen him live at least 6-7 times. Took many friends, parents and all of them walked out of the theatre with BIG eyes. Each show was out-of-this world good! I mean you could feel the electricity in the air. Still to this day those shows were some of the best live shows I've ever seen!!
Flash forward to the show I saw a few years ago and I was incredibly disappointed to say the least. What I saw was a tired looking guy who appeared to be on automatic pilot; going through the motions. I thought it was an off night but at this point I've read too many accounts of people who have experienced the same thing. And the whole idea of having to sit through a 20min ego-stroking video of his accomplishments was just plain silly. IMHO he should have taken a nice long-deserved hiatus, recharged his batteries and returned fresh. Instead he never stopped touring and I think we're seeing the results of that now; it's taken a toll on him. I will always be a Copperfield fan but he's not the same anymore and that makes me sad... |

I wonder if Copperfield is ever going to take a break and come back stronger...he needs to. I agree. I've seen him every year for the past 4 years and I keep thinking "why am I paying to see him and the same show again and again?" I hope he makes some much needed changes soon!

How about just stepping down. He will never be the DC of old. His show is stale and he is crusty. Step aside for the future of magic. IMHO.

I saw the show in Branson a few yrs ago... He was at the Andy Williams theater for two weeks... The show was good, but not great like the good old days...
The locals hated him and the old people told me they would never go back because he didn't mention the Veterans..... That's a standard thing in this town.... David doesn't really care what people thinks anymore.... He is now doing it for himself... He did the baby and had many bad words in the show. This isn't cool for a town like Branson.... Then a yr later I went and saw the same boring show in Springfield, Mo...... I told myself that would be the last time that I would go to his show.... If he could pick himself up and start back up with some good stuff, I would go.... But this same old S--- ... not working... The no girl thing is the most uncool thing he has ever done.... Now the only girls in the act wear stage hand black.. Not sexy at all . I went the Springfield show with a young magician friend and he had burned a CD of all of Davids music from over the yrss.... Anyhow we listened to all of this great stuff on the way to the gig and got pretty juiced up to see the old David... And then he came out with cr-p music and no energy... what a let down from the guy that was once so great.... PS: the sad thing is that David is still better than other magicians at his worst.

People can say whatever they want , but when your David Copperfield , look at the pressure to be #1 24/7. David Copperfield is still and always will be the GREATEST Illusionist in the world , and the individual we'd ALL like to perform like. He may be tired yes , but who in the business can still sell out theatres world-wide and is such a household name ?
We need to be a little less grilling of DC , because what he has done for MAGIC is unrepayable . I agree , if he's tried , maybe he needs a few years off. The main thing we need to see is what more can David Do ? He's done it all , toured the world , VEGAS , TV Shows , Global Media Madness , TV Interviews , and even controversy . I would say he goes to his private island , finds the fountain of youth scientist claim that's there , becomes 18 years old and does it like the DC of the 80's and Early 90's . Now that would silence us all and go down as the GREATEST trick of all time. lol - Carl Michael

I have not had a bad experience the past 10 years seeing him I remember when this talk started. I was thinking sometimes it might have been exagerated but to see TaylorReed dissapointed who is a friend of DC just wow I guess most of these rumors are pretty much all true.
Thanks,

In my opinion, the worst part of DC's tragic decline is that modern audiences don't have a high standard anymore. This is how people like David Blaine and Criss Angel become popular as illusionists. It is how we've gotten the breed of "entertainer" who perform at their audiences rather than for them. They exist as "superstars" first and foremost in their own minds and insist that audiences come along for the ego trip, rather than putting forth the effort to genuinely entertain. Unfortunately, the masses simply don't know any better.
It was mentioned how much magic owes to David. Let's not forget what he owes it in return. Had not Doug Henning, Harry Blackstone, Dante, etc, etc, etc paved the way as illusionists he'd be nowhere. (Really this can be said of all of us.) I agree that when I shell out money to see a live performance I expect to see a live performance. I don't mind a bit of video augmentation, but when it becomes a substitute for performance I do not feel like I've gotten what I've paid for. |

But, I had never had the chance to see the live show, having heard so much and followed the specials as well. I do not pay to see many magicians, and anticipating so much only to see what I described is a dis-service to me as a client. The specator does not owe the homage and payback to a performer (they do that with their admission), the performer owes the patron at all times. If I want to do a retrospect and go the the DC shrine, I will. But, when I am sold a bill of goods and it isn't delivered, then I am cheated and deserve better. Oh, and the tour of the world, Vegas, TV shows, and the Global media madness etc. etc. as you put it, was all self-agrandized in the opening 10 minute video as we were all reminded of his greatness. He even had the audience bow and genuflect, so I would call the experience "resting on his laurels".
