SoCal is the PLACE TO BE for twisters! I want to move there just to go to the jams....you can find my friend David at 3ringonline.com and I'm sure he will give you the details on the jams out there. David, Don and Laura Caldwell, Ken Stillman, Steve Yarosko, Jack Mattson, Becky Goodyear.....these are some of the top twisters in our industry and all are great people who are so willing to share! My first grade son just made a great dolphin from Mark's DVD, but him and I practice together. My first DVD was Tricky the Clown for 15.00. From there I enjoyed learning from a few books I purchased and obtained from the library.
The feel of the balloons comes from sitting down and twisting through a bag or two. Doc |

I bought Balloon engineering 1
http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/balloon-en......779.html and bad to the balloon 2 http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/bad-to-the......968.html Neither one was what I was looking for. I was looking for some basic animals that I could learn easily with step by step instructions. Balloon Engineering 1 was basically suggesting pumps and why you should use one. Bad to the Balloon 2 was put together very nice, but I don't think I would consider it a beginner's dvd. There is no teaching or breakdown of the balloons. The teaching is watching Mark tie a balloon animal quickly to music from two slightly different views. The production value is good, but Mark goes way too fast for a beginner and it is all done to music with no step by step instructions.

Not for nothing...
I like mark byrne's dvds because I find his designs to be a trillion times more effective, and as easy if not easier in some cases, as a standard balloon dog or other one balloon figure. Check out balloonhq.com for more basic info on balloons, but really I strongly feel a complete beginner can start from BTTB. As with anything, you need to practice and pop some balloons to get a feel for things. As for being too fast...do you have a pause button? Seriously, my best advice is to get a bag of balloons and just play until you get more comfortable. Learn to make everything on the dvds you have. Utilize BalloonHq. Buy Mark's other BTTB DVD. Maybe check out tmyers.com and browse their video section for beginner DVDs, there really isn't any bad stuff for sale there. Check out, Ralph Dewey, Dave Bartlett, Captain Visual. Good luck |

Thanks for the other resources.
Don't get me wrong, I like the sculptures on BTTB2. But as a beginner not only did he go to fast (yes I have pause, but as a beginner my hands are trying to hold in the twists) but there were times when he would twist the balloon and it would be covered with his hands so I couldn't tell what he did for sure. For example when he twisted the monkey head. I would have found it more helpful if he would have shown step by step what he did but as Mark said above, he never intended for it to be a beginner's dvd. Thanks again for the other resources.

Paul,
I was a beginner balloon twister a couple of months ago. I would highly recommend Mr. Stretch. His website is http://www.stretchc.com He sells tons of DVD's that range from basic to advanced. He Balloon Boot Camp DVD answers every question you asked from type of balloons to buy, where to buy them, pumps, basic twists and then he introduces you to the basic balloon animals. I got all of those down in about 3 days and then went to intermediate twisting. We have hired him to do our daughters Halloween party and he is FANTASTIC! Him and his wife will also answer emails and really help guide you through the process of getting started. Thanks, Bart Scott |

And again: "As to my previous comment, it might have sounded callous, however when people retail there is a silent agreement to honor the retail price of an item. TMeyers, Daytona Magic, Murphy's Magic, and countless other internet and brick & mortar magic shops all cary my DVDs at the agreed retail price. I sell my DVDs at the agreed price..... how do you think my wholesale customers would think if I suddenly had a 20% off sale? Tmeyers and Murphy's are my best 2 customers. To which end I say if you had bought directly from me I would gladly refund you your money if your not satisfied with the product. HOWEVER you bought from an internet discounter: $24.95 Sale: $24.20 Save: 3% off * Only $21.78 USD with Returning Customer Discount!! http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/bad-to-the......968.html "Intermediate and advanced twisters will love the flow and ease of this learning style. Unlike any other balloon DVD filmed, it has original music and location shots for each figure." Heck Dennis Loomis was a full $7 cheaper than that!!! As I have told anyone who has bought from me .... I support my product 100% if your having trouble I will walk you through it. I have field 100's of phone calls and e-mails about the product. Most have been accolades to be quite honest you are my 3rd complaint in the thousands I have sold. I will however honor the buy back policy at what I sold it for. Send it to me and I will give you 1/3 of cost back. (that is what Murphy's buys them for) Our you may ask your internet retailer for a refund.

Paul,
I would hold onto your Bad to the Balloon DVD and not turn it in for a refund. If you feel that they are too advanced for you right now, with a little effort, they will not be in a very short time. I use some of Mark's designs all the time in my balloon business, and I know a bunch of other folks that do as well. I tried to answer your questions in my earlier reply, and I don't think you will get much more info on a DVD than I already supplied in my post, except that it would be a talking head providing it to you. As someone else said, the best thing to do is practice. Heck, as I type this and look to my left, I see 5 balloon chihuahua's on my desk, as I am trying to perfect the design for maximum cuteness. As you practice and pop some balloons you will develop the feel required to improve your techniques. Also, with time and practice, you will get a better eye for proportion. I hope all of this helps, Steve |

Just to add my thought in -
Beginners one or two balloon models - there are intructions on Youtube and other websites fro free, save your money and spend it on balloons instead. Then after no time at all you will be able to progress on to Bad to the Balloon hats. There are also forums which give away basic designs too. I hope this helps launch you into the exciting and ever creative world of balloon twisting. Danny |

Mark,
I didn't want to sound like I was complaining. I knew you didn't consider your dvd for beginners when I bought it. I was just going off of what other Café members said and that is that your dvd would be a good beginners dvd. Maybe for some people it worked when they were starting out. I found it too difficult for me. I still think the sculptures you teach are very good, as was the production value. And I would still recommend it to people who have some experience tying balloons. Thanks for the links. -Paul

I also forgot to mention http://www.balloonchat.co.uk - balloon twisting forum, where there is a section called "balloon tutorial and help" and it shows in photos and words how to make about 6 -8 basic one balloon models.
And it explains nearly all of the balloon twists that you will ever need. danny |

To Bad to the Balloon,
You suggested that it's called "Retail" for a reason. But the complete title is: "Manufacturers SUGGESTED Retail Price." You will find in retail sales that there are vastly different retail prices from store to store. The current best seller may sell for the full Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price at many book stores, but you can get it for 15 or 20% less at Costco. I have not singled you out, I sell virtually all of the 6000+ products I handle at a discount. I am able to keep a low-overhead operation, offer a great flat rate shipping fee which saves customers many $$$ on larger orders, and still operate at a modest profit. And yet we stand behind everything we sell, provide Priority Mail Shipping, and enjoy a good reputation for our service. I know that some folks do not like this business model, and I am sorry if it bothers you, but it is completely legitimate and I make no apologies for my practices. There are comparable Internet Discount Businesses operating in virtually every area of retail sales. Dennis Loomis
