You could easily do his billet work using a different type of switch. Same goes for using more modern versions of a CT instead of the classic. I know this might raise hell because there is a lot of diverse opinion on this man, but after you get the "jist" of performing mentalism (MUCH more important than the methods) I would get a few things by Kenton Knepper. His stuff will give you some good material method-wise, but more importantly (and this is why I love him) his material gets you THINKING like a mentalist in your presentations. You will start dropping Wonder Words all the time, without even knowing it, enhancing your presentation with linguistics. And it's more than for just mentalism. Once you learn some of his thinking, you will have improved audience control too. His material is NOT for everyone... but it has done amazing things for me. For a knockout "beginner" mental effect give Kollosal Killer a look. It will give you a taste of his thinking and you can see if it fits with what you are going for. |

I think before Annemann or Corinda, my suggestion is to read "Fundamentals" by Bob Cassidy. This is the best introduction to the thinking, subtext and character of the mentalist.
It can be purchased at http://www.lybrary.com Sean |

Learn sw*mi and billet work as early as possible, it'll hold you in good stead for the years to come...get a jump start...just using those two techniques - will enable you to do far too many good effects that you will also, as a by product, save yourself a helluva lot of money over the years..
13 steps/pme/and spend about 25 quid in a shop like rymans/staples...

Im new to mentalism and would like to start out from the basic right the way up... I'm surprised that no one mentioned the Tarbell series. There's quite a bit of foundational material in there that is still relevant(and powerful) for today. Bosco |

13 steps is a must read for the beginner and I might ad for any mentalist who has not read it. In addition I always recommend that a beginner develop some reading (fortune telling) capability. Learn something--numerology,graphology,palmistry,
Cardreading, SOMETHING. I think Dr. Charles Scott's 'Psi-Grafico' is an excellent effect to start with. Not only do you get a wonderful thought reading device but you also get some basic graphology. It can be an act by its self. |

Setting myself up here...
I read 13 Steps. Good info, but... Watched Osterlind's Mind Mysteries 1 - 4. Holy Cow! I use this stuff. Daily!! Vol 2 is my favorite. I met Osterlind at a lecture in '91. From my notes I was very impressed, but except for "My Father's Favorite" (which is a staple for me) I wasn't using much. I even purchased the Memorization for BCS instead of making use of BCS until I wathced ROMM2. This stuff is deadly. I plan on pursuing Bancheck next. |

13 Steps was one of my first books on the subject of mentalism. I'm glad it was I learned a lot from it and use it as a refresher on some things. Larry Beckers' Stunners Plus is also fantastic. You know with those two books you'd have a full time show that could change often.
Good magic to all, Eric |

The first book you should read is "The Trick Brain by Dariel Fitzkee" Not about mentalism per say! But this book will open your mind, once you have read that then read it again...

Floyd... are you for real? The Trick Brain is a terrible suggestion as a first book for a mentalist. I'd love to know why you think it's a good first choice.

" The first book you should read is "The Trick Brain by Dariel Fitzkee" Not about mentalism per say! But this book will open your mind, once you have read that then read it again... " Note I said "not about mentalism per say. it will open your mind" Now if you have to ask why I would suggest this book then you have not read it or maybe you did and not understand what you read. Now why would I suggest such a thing! The trick brain, will show anyone who digests it how magic is formulated how you can take an effect apart and get more out of the magic you perform. Now why would mentalists want to be armed with this information before trying to learn how to perform mentalism? I wounder! Give it a read!! So your turn why is it a terrible suggestion!! Do you think a starting mentalists is way to uninformed to understand the book? Or are you suggesting that the book itself is no good.

I read Mind, Myth & Magic before Corinda and Anneman. Although it's a fantastic book, I made the mistake of reading the New Testament before the Old.
If you have trouble being motivated to read 13 Steps and Practical Mental Magic, watch Osterlinds Easy to Master Mental Miracles DVDs... after that, you'll be engrossed in reading the classics. I knew I "should" be reading them; without a mentor or guiding hand, I guess I needed proof of their value. Pure Telepathy, blindfold routines, psychometry, predictions... Speaking of value, you can get a copy of Practical Mental Effects for under $15, for crying out loud! Corinda's is around $25. Best deal you'll probably ever get in mentalism books.

I’m a little surprised that Tarbell and Hay are being overlooked. While both are magic authors, there is significant beginning “mental” material in both of their works. One thing I have discovered is that Mentalism is more about the framing of the effect than the effect itself. There are theorists and there are performers; there are hobbyists and professionals. I am going to make an observation here, good beginning material depends on what you seek to accomplish. The thing about the advice you get here is that it ranges the gamut from armchair quarterbacks to working professionals and everything in between. The nice thing is if you filter the information you can gain a lot of good advice; on the down side if you don’t filter you can also assimilate a lot of garbage.

For a first time beginner a simple book from Marc Lemezma's
Mind Magic --- good book for a total beginner that will master the art of mental magic kept simple and strong -- that's where I started. From there onwards to the meatier things such as 13 Steps and Anneman -- can be a bit heavy ? Buy all the DVD's of Richard Osterlind !!!. Oh boy don't forget Looch --- Your Thoughts are Mine ---- Simple and Direct !!! |

There are several great ideas here for you. As you read through the comments you will see books and DVD's listed and refered to over and over again. They are repeated for a reason. In general it is always best to read. The more you read the more you learn. I also suggest that you spend some money and watch successful performers and how they do what they do. I know many who are new to mentalism and magic who have never seen live performances. You can learn from DVD's but not merely as much as you will learn from watching a real pro perform in a live show.
