I’ve been avid student for 10 years plus and have had my eyes on a certain effect for a few years but because of all the things that happen in life it got pushed to the back burner. Well upon running across this effect again recently, I decided to let no more time pass and pick it up. The effect is Whisper by Roger Klause.
It’s been said many times there is an effect this gentleman performs prior to Whisper called Coins for Connoisseurs. I’m curious as to what the description is of the effect Coins for Connoisseurs by Roger Klause on Greater Magic DVD #12? Any help would be wonderful and greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wolfstone |

That would be Roger's reworking of the first coin effect in the "Dai Vernon Book of Magic".

I don't have that book but I do own Vernon Chronicles vol. 1 & 3; looking forward to getting the other 2 soon.
Are you referring to Dai's Coins through Table or something else? Thanks, Wolfstone |

It was something special as coins through table handlings went when published. Since then there's been much work on both the novel (at the time) use of the popup move and other techniques used. Have a look at Al Schneider's Coins Across for another though similar handling of the theme.

Jonathan,
Thanks for the input. I’ve seen Mr. Schneider’s coins across and some other wonderful routines by him. To get a good idea of Roger’s routine I’ll just have to purchase this DVD. Would you say it’s worth it? I’ve studied a few coins thru table routines and currently I’m working with Troy Hooser’s in Destroyers using the gravity flipper. Have you seen Roger perform Coins for Connoisseurs and Whisper together or either one of them separately? Do you perform any type of coins thru table routine? Cheers, Wolfstone |

Gee that's a lot of questions there.
I expect a DVD of Roger Klause teaching magic is worth having. I have not seen him do the trick, but Darwin Ortiz was doing it long ago so I know it's a good routine. I have not seen Roger do Whisper but I did get to see someone else do that so I know it's a good routine. The coins through table stuff I worked on long ago was published in Apocalypse magazine. Hope that helps, Jon

The write-up of Roger Klause's Coins for Connoiseurs appears in Volume I of The Art of Close-up Magic by Lewis Ganson. I have a republication from 1972, So I don't know when it was originally published.

I've seen Roger perform both many times but never together. Both routines will serve you quite well for a long time to come.
Note that Roger's routines are enhancements of existing routines so study both and you'll be glad you did. |

Soleil et Lune was written up in Richard's Almanac. Another wonderful handling of Roger's.

On the DVD, Friends of Roger Klause, Volume 2, there is footage of Roger performing Coins for Connoisseurs for a lay audience at a private party. It was shot in 1982.

The original write-up of Coins for Connoisseurs was in The Gen in the 1960's sometime. I will try to look for the exact citation when I get back to my library.
