Not sure where to stick this...so if it gets moved, I'm cool with that!
One of my stage pieces is to do the balloon swallow. Get's awesome reactions and is a lot of fun. Here's my thing... Recently, I purchased the Sword Swallowing Sword...you know...the gimmicked one that coils up like one of the slap braclets from the 80s. I think it's funny to swallow the sword to the oohs and aghhs and then just pull it out of my mouth exposing that it was just a gag (pun intended) and then go into the balloon swallow. A friend in magic said that it looks so good as a real swallow that I should NOT expose it for the laugh but that I should do the entire routine backwards...start by swallowing the balloon and then do the SS illusion how it was intended (to make people think I'm actually doing it) with the justification to POP the already swallowed balloon. I'm fenced... I've done it both ways. Both ways get GREAT (but different) reactions. It's in character to ALWAYS go for the laugh...but then it's also in my ego to want to amaze the snot out of my audience. What to do???? What do y'all think?? Christopher

I think doing the sword swallow after would be stronger in that it takes away the response I have heard when doing just the balloon swallow, and that is they expect to see the balloon again, now you can one liner it and make a joke out of it, but I like the idea of doing the sword swallow after makes the balloon swallow have better"flow"

If the audience really buys the sword swallow, why throw that moment away? Let them think you can do it. Sometimes cool magic can be ruined by a "clever" gag.

Do the balloon swallow, but the balloon slips out of your fingers and you accidentally swallow the whole thing.
You are distressed. You feel "stuffed." You need to puncture the balloon to relieve the pressure. Do the sword swallow. Can you make a sound like a muffled pop? And then (dare you do this?), pass gas. . . loudly. |

It is funny, maybe a bit more PC, have a sound effect of a balloon losing air, still funny, but if you like to veer from the fart and gross type lines, that might work

I said it was funny...but wouldn't do that. What I do like is to swallow the balloon, then explain how I have to pop it. Then swallow the sword and have an audible poping sound. Hmmm...???

After the pop, when you pull the sword out of your mouth, a bit of the balloon could be attached to the tip of the sword as it comes out of your mouth...souvenir anyone????

Lyle, where did you get the Sword Swallowing Sword? I have that telescopic Chinese sword. Which one is better?

I love the ideas presented, but if you wanted to go for the expose, go for a fake expose, run it along the outside of your neck like you were swallowing it, then I would stop, look at the crowd and say do you think I would really do this? Then go for the "real" swallow.

I have decided to do the "exposure". I've tried it now BOTH WAYS and it just sells better as a gag then a true to life swallow. It also sets up the balloon swallow as even more impossible I think.
Thanks for all the comments and advice...but for me, I'm always going to go for the laugh! = )

Here's the thing. In my experience, most people think that Sword Swallowing is fake anyway. Unless than can look/touch the actual sword to be swallowed. When I did it straight, it never got the response that I was hoping to get. But when I expose it as a gag, it brings the house down.
It's a no brainer!

This is a good illusion if you know how to sell it.
I always like the idea but found only low quality gimmick Swallowing Swords, looks like cheap toys. Does anyone knows where to find a set of quality swords, one ungimmicked and the other gimmicked? Thanks! |

About the best I've ever found is an original Roydon "Swallowing Sword". Wooden handle with the roll-up type (not collapsing) blade. I've mananged to find 4 of them over the years, sold one, and still have the other 3. They also made one of a slightly different style where the blade rolled behind the handle and it came with an extra blade so you could pull it back out from the side of your stomach.
