Similar to his Knife Thru Coat routine, but (IMHO) just as entertaining, Wayne Dobson incorporates Vent Work with Two Volunteers and his Sponge Ball routine.
Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAWi15MAOmo&feature=related

Since a LOT of local performers here (Manila, Philippines) have been using the vent mask, I stopped using it regularly since a couple of years ago.
This is how I have been doing my human dummies act, with a few modifications, since then. It requires no vent prop and this is very flexible routine. And you don't have to be a vent to do this! Dobson is pure genius! |

To make this routine work, I am guessing that it must take quite a bit of pre-show work with the two volunteers... or do you simmply coach them on their way up to the satage or on the spot --with stage whispers?

Some needed to be instructed on stage (that's why I also use a handheld mic, so you can talk to him without everyone hearing you). In short, you've got to master volunteer management. |

Jonathan, Wayne didn't coach his helpers, it was all down to his timing and 'reading' his assistants.
Cheers, Dave

Not coaching your helpers makes it more natural and more funny on the part of both the audience and helpers themselves.
Wayne Dobson's routine shows how great he is...his sense of humor shows us all why he is in that show Thanks for posting that video I will post my own spongeball routine next week..a routine I have been doing for more than a decade. Not as hysterical as Wayne's routine, but I get some good laughs out of it...and some gigs too

I must try this out with children, although I am not a vent, great bit of comedy.

Wayne Dobson when he did this all those years ago, got two of the most famous celebrities at the time, Frank Bruno & Harry Carpenter. No per show or stage whispers, just great management. I have seen him do this on numerous occaisions, always brilliant. Despite his illness he still manages to come up with new ideas and effects, a true inspiration.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

May I point out that Wayne has licensed the right to do this routine to a very few performers, e.g. Raymond Crowe of Australia. Wayne has not made it publicly available. So really, no one else should be doing it this way. Yes, I know we all do sponge balls. And, yes, I know we all do vent. But combining them was Wayne's creation, and no one else should be doing it.
