Recently I've been noticing this distinctive ozone smell coming from a particular spot in my house. Given that there's no electrical devices in that area, what the heck could be causing this ?!?!?
I don't know if it's dangerous or whatnot!

I don't know what that is but it reminds me of a smell that has been going around NYC.
People have bee saying they get this faint smell of Maple syrup. It has been reported by many folks from all over the city, and it has been going on periodically for some time. Finally, last week, after many months of investigation, the smell was tracked down to it's origin...NEW JERSEY!!! lol. Yeah, seems there is a small industrial company that produces a chemical (harmless...ha!) and when the wind is right, it wafts over into the city, causing the locals to wonder if we are being attacked by chemical warfare... Lots of good New Jersey stinks jokes were going around for a week! Sorry...back to your problem at hand. |

I'm guessing that the chem smelled from Jersey was propylyne glycol. Yes...Harmless. You probably ate some today.

The NJ smell was from fenugreek. A perfume factory I believe.
As for household ozone generating areas....I got nothing.

Gaddy, before you do anything about it make sure you file an environmental impact statement and clear it with any groups that protect the rights of ozone smells.

All it takes is a cluster of three Oxygen atoms, got any oxygen tanks nearby? Have you been running your heater (ozone filters)? Do you have any infrared lamps or elements (which would actually be Ion)?

I noticed a very strange smell was repeatedly occurring in our kitchen...kind of a feint electrical fire smell. Took me weeks before I realized what it was.
I had installed one of those energy saving light bulbs in the overhead lamp. I don't know what you call the dammed things in English. Anyway, although I use the bulbs throughout the house, they are always in table lamps--we generally don't use overhead lights in our house. Apparently the smell drifts downward, so I only noticed it in the kitchen. But I went around sniffing all of the lamps in the house and--sure enough--those bulbs smell. |

Ahh yes, our friend static electricity!!
A static discharge in the presence of air or oxygen can create ozone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Static_electricity Or just ozone being produced from the dry air and sunlight. http://capita.wustl.edu/capita/CapitaRep......Form.htm There are many things that could cause this smell, if it truly is ozone. Really dry air, and you walking across the carpet, creates thousands of little discharges. Rubbing a blanket on your head (assuming you have hair) on a cold day can cause many discharges. Bad electrical wiring sparking repeatedly, especially in dry air(I hope this is not the case). Do you have any plants in that room? Is the sun facing the window? The second link I posted, mentions about chemical reaction of air and VOCs and sunlight. Try running a humidifier in that room only, and see if you still smell the ozone. Dry air makes it much easier for sparks to jump air gaps. |
