I travel quite a bit and like to eat at the local chains rather than the nationwide ones. My two favorite burger places are In-N-Out (West) and Five Guys (East). I think Five Guys is my favorite so far, for two reasons:
1. Jalepenos 2. Cajun fries However, In-N-Out does have shakes, and I really like a chocolate shake with my burger. Anyone else been to both and would like to comment? Any other local chains I need to be sure and check out?
If you can pull it off in a biker bar without being violated by a corn dog, more power to you.

I keep hearing about 5 guys...I will have to give them a look.
But here in NJ, there are SO many EXCELLENT burger joints it's hard to imagine 5 guys (A chain) being any better. I am however, going to make the trip to New Haven, CT. to the home of where the Hamburger was invented - Lou's. They still make 'em the same way as when they opened. AND still use the same ovens or broilers, or what ever... Just a fresh burger on sliced toasted bread...NO ketchup served or allowed in the place! http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=402  |

I've got a 5 guys down the street from me here in good ole Bristol. I am sorry to say I cannot report on it though as I haven't been there. We'll make it our NEXT trip Justin as long as no one accuses us of dating.

Vandy, I'd check out the one in WI, but it's a little too long of a drive. But next time I'm in the area, I'll check it out.

Ride your bike over. We have tons of great biking in WI. Beautiful rolling hills. I don't know if the "original" place is still open. Either way, I seriously doubt Lou or Charlie actually invented the thing. I just know everyonce in a while someone names Seymour WI. as the birthplace of the hamburger.

I don't do the East Coast but In and Out Burger is way over rated in my opinion. Their fries suck as much as their burgers do.

In n' out rules!!!!! try animal style (they even make animal style fries)
from wiki: (the first listing) Charlie Nagreen 1885, Seymour, Wisconsin. According to one claim of the first hamburger, Charlie Nagreen served the world's first hamburger at the Seymour Fair (Outagamie County Fair) of 1885. "Hamburger" Charlie decided to flatten a meatball and place it between slices of bread to increase portability.

Lol! No pun intended right?
I say the burger is from Wisconson and I will injure with cruelty anyone who disagrees with me. That's how serious I am about my hamburger origins. I ain't playin'.

Connetticut (sp?) gave us all types of insurance and bank fraud techniques and also the idea that if you have enough money you can get away with murder or rape for many years before getting put away. They also came up with the brilliant idea of making public beaches 'open' to the public from December through March while making them 'private' from April through November in order to keep the riff raff out, meaning people of color out of NYC, and even stopping the sell of lottery tickets in some areas for the same reason.

I think that the meat patty was introduced to Russia by the Mongols in the 13th century. And I'm willing to bet that the "proto-hamburger" goes back quite a bit earlier than that...

Me too. It's just like the sandwich. Like we needed the Earl of Sandwich to tell us that meat and bread go together? Come on. It's one of those things that I don't think was ever "invented" per se. It's just natural.

5 guys is just down the road from me here in the east. But, whenever my family goes west to see my dad's half, In-n-out is amazing.
Burgers- 5 guys Fires- In-n-out Service- 5 guys Feel good after- In-n-out better tshirts- In-n-out price- yikes while you wait fun- 5 guys(peanuts...) okay so I say it's a tie. BUt In-n-out would top it, just because I don't get it that often, so it's a real treat, whereas I eat 5 guys a lot and I'm used to it... |
