I have wondered about this effect for a long time but would really like to see a demo before I plunk down my money on the table.

Does anyone know where I can see a clip of this being performed?

Thanks.

Nope... but I can tell you that you won't be disappointed.
I used to do several of the effects on there and they play real well.
I don't do them that much any more, mainly because I have just worn them out.
But ever now and again I will do them.
It's a great DVD.

Bob lectured last week at Denny and Lee's in Baltimore and this routine was fantastic. Actually bought the DVD and it's great to sit and watch it over again. Very comical and entertaining. It's worth whatever you pay for it. Cheers,

Thanks for the recommendations. Does the penetration happen in an instant or is it done slowly?

The penetration can be done both ways.
Bob teaches it done fast, but I do it rather slow.

Just a warning though.
Don't plan on doing this in a show and wear a dress.
When you get ready for the show you will realize it's not going to work.
Just thought I would throw that out there.

That's why I never wear a dress when performing.

Paul,

You can get a very quick glimpse of this on my promo video. Fast forward to 2:00. Sorry, that’s the best I can do.

A bit of a coincidence that I started a 'Hang 'Em High' thread in the Guest of Honor forum exactly 2 minutes after you started this. I have some other complimentary this to say about this effect here:

Randi,

Sorry this trick doesn’t work out for you, but you have to admit, you have certain other advantages, like a more deceptive place to hide doves. Smile

Obviously you have never met me.
I am lucky to get a hummingbird hidden.

But the dress thing is a true story.
I used to do Hang 'em High all the time.
Then I had this great idea to buy all of these old vintage 60's mod dresses as a new style for me.
They are awesome and the first time I wore one to a show, I started to get set up, and...
oops! This isn't going to work.
Plan B!!

From personal experience it works GREAT with a volunteer as well. I have coordination issues (CP) and can not guarantee my coordination won't "act up".

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

Funny story, Randi!

Greene,

Can you explain that a little further? When you say volunteer, do you mean a plant? To make the rope go through a volunteer you would certainly have to set it up before hand.

If you mean having volunteers each hold an end of the rope, then yes, that adds to it, to have someone so close to you when it happens makes it stronger.

I think Greene is talking about the alternate versions on the DVD.

Bob does teach a version where you use a spectator.

Hey, sounds great! I didn't think this trick could get any better but I might have to check out that DVD.

Thanks for the tip!

I performed the effect for a time. It was part of my opener so there would be no "shifting" problems that could occur later in the show (I learned this the hard way). I'll never forget when I changed my wireless microphone setup from a handheld around my neck to a wireless lapel mike where the transmitter sat on my belt.

It never occurred to me that I needed to practice an effect that I had done hundreds of time. I went into my opener at a show and the rope tangled with the new cord hanging down from my lapel to the transmitter. I don't even recall how I got out it, but I was stuck. I think I was able to "pull" it through, but I quickly had to figure out how to bunch up the rope so I could untangle the mess. Magic Murphy's law and all.

Wayne,

That's happened to me too. It was hard to explain to the audience why the rope could go through my body but not my microphone cord!

Paul,

I had this in my show about 10 years ago, but I eventually removed it. I didn't like the fact that the rope got inexplicably longer. Also, although admittedly a much lesser concern, I didn't like the lack of examinability of the rope. Having the spectators "give the ends a little tug" on the two ends to show it's solid can also be a problem -- slightly pulled the gimmick out of place.

After reading all of the positive experiences from others on the Café, maybe I gave up on this one too early.

Munsey,

You make some valid points. Take note, I do a complete cut and restored routine with the two volunteers before I get to Hang em High. At several times during this routine the volunteers tug on the rope and inspect it. At the end I throw the rope in my box and announce the "famous cutting the person in half trick" then I reach in a grab the other rope.

I remember when I saw Bob Sheets lecture, he recommended doing some kind of card swap before Hang em High using the rope as a tool. The idea is to subliminally get the audience to think its a normal rope without saying that or passing it out for inspection. If you act as if it is normal, it is.

As far as the rope getting longer, all I can tell you is no one has ever caught that.

Yes... I did the cards across routine that he teaches on the DVD.
I changed the card selection though.
I use a whole deck instead of ten cards, or what ever amount it was.

That is enough to prove the rope is solid.
I never had them tug on it.
Which Bob does show a way to do it that doesn not ruin the rope.
I just don't think it was needed.
