Is that Tomas from Europe? If so I didn't know he was here, he is a very talented guy and one heck of a nice fellow as well.

The problem with listing anyone is that you are sure to leave out someone...especially if you are old and feeble minded...Appologies Santa.
Then there are those that others mention that you go "huh?" However in those cases, political affiliations and geographical allegiances sometimes color the selections. I go by 'knee jerk' reactions which can exhibit predictability, thus the brain of a frog. Santa is never predictable so is way up on my list (if I made one).

There are those here who are good debaters and have command of their resources. That's one type of intellectualism.
Then there are those who avoid the debates (which, in and of it self may be very smart) and sprinkle the occasional flake of common sense wisdom, like dandruff from the guru on the mountain, that just so floors everyone here that no one can disagree. I'll show my nerd roots by using the Dungeons and Dragons analogy: there's Intelligence, and then there's Wisdom. One helps with books and studies; one helps with life and society. It's the difference between a lawyer without a lick of common sense, and the successful businessman who never graduated high school. Some people have both, some people have one or the other, and some people have neither. (And half of the last two types think they're really the first type.)

Yep. I've also noticed that real wisdom is always free.

Isaac Asimov was a member of MENSA for a short while. After a few meetings, he discovered that the ratio of people whose views he agreed with vs. those whose views he did not agree with was pretty much the same in MENSA as it was in the outside world. He let his membership lapse on the theory that he didn't want to hang around people based on nothing more than doing well on an IQ test.
Then there's the great quote about the Professor in 'The Powerpuff Girls' who invented a 'mecha' that defeated the monster, but destroyed Townsville in the process. "Just because you're a genius, doesn't make you a smart guy!"

I went to a MENSA meeting and really didn't enjoy myself, it was like not caring about football and being stuck in a room with a pack of football loons (not fans, loons, like the guys who mail suggestions to coaches). The three smartest guys I ever met in my life consisted of two guys who never went to college but did well in careers (one, sadly, passed away at an early age) while the third from the last I heard was homeless mostly because he couldn't deal with real world situations. The most brilliant guy I knew, which in my consideration is above smart, and grant you he may be a millionaire now but I don't know, had a nervous break down in his senior year of highschool. He had full rides to MIT, Cal Poly, Stanford, all of them, his choice. He was, at around 14 doing research projects at Stanford with advanced mathmatics. His breakdown was due to the simple fact that he was a little dorky guy who at 16 would get his behind kicked by his nine year old brother. He went to public school because his parents didn't want him to be so socially messed up because he couldn't relate to other teens (I think I was his only friend). Never got a kiss from a girl, never danced, he just didn't know how to enjoy anything in life. After I joined the service he was basically on his own and snapped. Last I saw him he had not gone go college because of the breakdown, had discovered drugs, and basically was very anti social and wouldn't even speak to me.
So much for brilliance eh? |

I remember reading an article once on how we do our best to support those with emotional and mental disabilities, but we expect the "gifted" to shift for themselves and are frequently surprised with they collapse under the social pressure of being "gifted!"
I myself did very well on IQ tests in Jr. High but managed to squander it very nicely thank you.

At age 14, my teacher (Miss Essex, renowned by all for her beauty, by all the boys for the fact that 'sex ' was part of her name - we were 14, and by most of the boys for her large and shapely breats - age was probably irrelevant there) told me that when I grew out of my teenage immaturity I would stop squandering a fine brain.
She was no psychic - all I grew out of was being teenage - the immaturity and squandering have remained constants. Destiny |

I used to work with a guy,, a former physics teacher, who once told a customer "I didn't know that, and it upsets me, because I make it my business to know everything." He is now a victim of divorce and a stroke...

I've known a few members of MENSA- and the one that sticks with me most was an arrogant jerk. One of his catch-phrases was, "Well, I'm in MENSA, and this is stupid." He lorded his high IQ over everyone whenever he had the chance. Unfortunately, it's made me slightly biased against MENSA members.
I later found out he never actually graduated college- he ended up a few credits short of his degree. Guess MENSA was the only thing he had to brag about. As Ed pointed out- being smart means you're held to a higher standard. The really smart people don't let anyone know how smart they really are...

One of the funniest ever puff pieces in our local paper was about a pompous arrogant git who everyone knew was a moron.
The interviewer recorded as fact that he had been invited to join MENSA but had turned them down because he was offended by their elitism. A couple of years later when he was convicted of fraud he was unable to turn down the invitation to reside at public expense for a period of time. Destiny |
