Here's some pictures of cemetery 1 at Eastern State Mental Hospital.
http://www.interment.net/data/us/wa/spokane/esh1/index.htm This hospital was an entirely self contained community. They farmed their own food. Raised animals for food too. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~asylum......dex.html You know what else was popular is postcards from the hospital. People who visited the area used to send postcards with paintings of the hospital to their people back home. Given how popular the postcards were, you can probably find mental hospital postcards on eBay or something.

Kotah, thanks, maybe only restrain the jerks. The threat of being strapped doen could be pretty effective too.
And the straps would be constantly in their way when they try to put their arms on the arms of the chairs. But being strapped down would certainly be beyond dramatic. Get em strapped down and start going through their wallets and purses. Be good prep for cold reading. Silvertongue I really like Maggies back story. Don't overlook the toupee as a possibility in the story. How did she get it off of the attendants head without him noticing? It would be her prize possession, the crowning achievment of theivery.

I would think that there would be a great opening for some emotional stuff, as quite possibly her ONLY 'real' connections, affections, human warmth and belonging . . . comes vicariously through a few of the items that she has purloined over time.
These are very special treasures. As she touches them, she feels a measure of the 'belonging' that she does not ever feel in the rest of her life. The faint echoes of being held by warm, loving, protective arms. The second hand memories of falling asleep in the protective arms of a parent, perhaps. Such a memory that she never knew otherwise. A second-hand sensation of an older siblings warm, firm, reassuring hand that was held when in frightened darkness - something she longed for but never really had. A child's small rubber ball that replays, in her mind, the laughter of other young children at play; spirit-freeing sounds she's only heard through windows or on the other side of high brick walls. These treasures don't LOOK like anything special, for their value is never in their appearance, but only in the 'information' only available to a psychometrician. . . a 'toucher,' sometimes they've been called. As she is 'touched' by the treasures, too. brane |

You nearly brought Maggie to tears with that beautiful eulogy, thanks Brane.
Critter I actually found 3 Asylum postcards for Colney Hatch, online in a picture database, just never knew what they were thanks for that... I think if this was a spook/seance show it would be very cool to have the Medium strapped into one of those restraining chairs, forehead strap and all... You guys have really helped me flesh out the Magpies character and I'm really greatful, thank you all. I have decided on a definite couple so far and they are; - A letter- Bearing my name and the date. - A 1936 Colney Hatch Patient Registry- The head nurse made the fortunate mistake of leaving this laying around one day. - A monocle- Owned by one of the Doctors who had a great fondness for the theater. - A ring of skeleton keys- half-inched (pinched) from one of the orderlies. - Some burnt splinters of wood- She used these to draw the map of the Asylum and write the letter that was waiting there for me. These she pilfered a few days after the great fire of 1903 when 51 patients perished in the flames. - A battered old child size cricket ball- Thanks Brane. I'm still working on other objects, the story and ideas, I've not actually got to Maggies part in the script yet, but its almost wrote itself with this thread. None of these objects will be used in effects apart from LUNA. I have written a 20 minute or so introduction to this effect and am now having to go back to subtly tie things in. This will be a storytelling theatrical piece... Mystery Theater. If anything is inspired please feel free to post your thoughts. Thanks again.

The letter, written in charcoal...
Years ago, I visited a friend, and he had a letter pinned to the wall. Written in orange and brown magic marker, the letter had been taped to a Dylan album cover (album cover- it's a- skip it for now) when the person writing the letter was at the outside of the page, the orange marker was used. When they got to the sillouette of Dylan, the brown marker was used. Result, a letter with the sillouette of Bob Dylan suggested in the letters themselves. I tried this once myself using pencil and fine tipped magic marker, and it's much more subtle. Some people don't see anything until you point it out, some people realize there is a portrait, and some people, recognize the portrait (although I used a less recognizable character- Professor Fate from "The Great Race") If you did a portrait of "Maggie" in darker letters, maybe go over each letter in the portrait twice or three times, it might make a "brain bomb" that you leave for someone else to find and point out. If that fits into your sceanario at all.

Magus, that is an incredible suggestion! It can be played as subtly as one wishes.
All the ideas here are great ones, ant this is one of the most interesting threads to appear. Thanks to all; this is great! Bill

What impressed me the most about this thread, is Silvertongue stated the problem, politely fielded questions and commented on statements,.
And when he was done, gave a little more about what he was doing, and then... said thank you. A few people who ask questions on this site should take note. Thank YOU Sivertongue, a pleasure to be of assistance.

Have you read the comic "Fable" ?
Then go back to my Alice idea (I've used the concept in other routines), Alice is in a mad asylum (because she things she's Alice in Wonderland). At the asylum she meets other strange fellows (the Mad Hatter, Twindledee...)... Little by little, with the story, the audience starts believing that she's he real Alice. It's working with any other fictional character. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_(Vertigo) |

Aaaaawwwww shucks... I've been playing around with that invisible image Magus and I must say again you are a bloody genius! I found a nice silhouette of Maggie... Vick I'm finding I have to stick solely with psychometry, I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible. Thanks though guys.
Its funny Alice should be brought up. She is a big part of my inspiration in Magic. I have always wanted to give the audience the experience of Alice... The experience of Wonderland... Your idea is similar to what I'm trying to achieve Curator but I am using myself as the main character. I've kept very strictly to the storytelling model of the Heroes Journey also because of the Madness theme I've interwoven the stages of a hallucination into the script. There are 5... -Emergence of surprising or warded off memories or fantasy images. -Frequent reality checks. -Last vestige of insight as hallucinations become real. -Fantasy and distortion elaborated on and confused with actual perception. -Internal/external boundaries destroyed and possible pantheistic experience. So basically the introduction is based around the above 5 ending with my starting work at the Colney Hatch Asylum. Maggie's part of the show will be the start of the fantasy or special world of the Heroes Journey. The hallucination formula is now repeated again but this time also demonstrated whereas in the introduction its all linguistic -Storytelling-. Does this make any sense??? What I'm basically trying to achieve is a modern day fairytale that the audience can experience first hand, or be part of. Like Neo being guided by Morpheus in the Matrix or Alice being led down the rabbit hole. I will use my own Madness as a source of empathy and contact to touch on theirs and draw the audience into a psychosis of sorts. I have laden the introduction with suggestion and powerful symbols that will ripen in the magical part of the show... I hope. I feel mad just thinkin about it. Thanks again guys.

Kudos to Silver tongue, and to all who responded in a serious creative manner.
A thread such as this stimulates the mind; which makes having read it its own reward. Many places such as t his were self sufficient communities. THE one in Carville dealt with and housed people with leprosy. Government doctors and civilians staffed the facility. Some patients spent their entire lives there, and are presently burried on the grounds. Not a mental facility, but many pararallels may be drawn drawn never the less. Thank you again Silver tongue for posting such an illuminating thread. I'm certain, in your hands the end result will be pure theater. KOtah |

I got the distinct vibe people had died in there... Children had died in there...
Ohhh if the crumbling walls of the Hatch could talk, they would tell a 1000 stories... Stories of how peoples illnesses had landed them there, how once they were diagnosed with a mental illness their civil and human rights were part of the past... Lost in time they languished for decades... abused... neglected... forgotten... and buried without so much as a number to mark their graves... Isolated from the world these unfortunate souls lived without hope.

I just remembered that it was a dark Alice character and it was in a video game.

Soon she could feel all the patients in the Asylum... their madness... their terror... all of it suddenly hers... flooding in... unstoppable... real and tangible and overpoweringly terrible. Ohhh the fear... the heart wrenching, spine-melting fear… The nurses never did understand how she kept screaming... even after all those sedatives. It took her years to understand her unasked for ability's... Hidden from the world... handling only certain objects, she slowly built shields between herself and the rest of the universe.
