When you saw a pencil box, do you mean the kind of case that children keep their kindergarten supplies in, crayons, markers, glue, etc? Or the kind of box that a dozen pencils come in?

Yeah Brian, he stole your idea for a trick before you thought of it!
I should mention, that I've never seen "House Mouse" other than the listing online at Camirand Academy of Magic / in their print catalog. I don't know what it's like... I was just "aware" of it. - Donald

OK, I'm trying to fit a show into a Husky case from home depot and I'm having trouble with that.
I usually bring in to a 30 minute show: Suitcase table Suitcase Keyboard stand Boombox Backdrop stand in a carry bag Backdrop Curtains in plastic box It takes me 30 minutes to set up and 20 to tear down. How great it would be to take just a pencil box!

Magi seem to feel either strongly positive or strongly negative (I'm on the positive side) about Docc Hillford's act 20 MINUTES WITH A BALLOON

Ross,
I seem to be having trouble bringing up that website on my landline, I'm going to go with another dvd. JK Is there any demo video out there I can see before I drop $45 on something that is getting mixed reviews?

Re: 20 minutes...I used his routine all the time and it really does work. The only issue that I have is that some parents (especially when you are getting a hefty fee) expect to see 'stuff'. It doesn't matter that you entertained 20 5 year olds and kept them excited and in place for 45 minutes....'you didn't do enough magic' is the the feedback that I would get (and I do request feedback from every show.) So now I do about "10 minutes with a balloon"...and that's mainly for younger (5 and lower) kids.

Great concept! Excellent brainstorming idea...
For our overseas friends, a pencil box is about 8" by 6" by 2" ( or the size of a cigar box) CW guy |

Thank you for the great ideas... I forgot about Sammy Smiths Pocket effects and ordered the mini Tail Spin a sorta throw the tail on the donkey, and it should fit perfectly in my small case. This is what I have that will fit in this case, a little larger than a pencil box.
1)Stiff Rope effect 2)Magic Silk w/ TT and Dye Tube 3)Magic Sponge Nose w/ Clown Nose / soft red sponge ball / bladder squeeker and Red D' Lite. 4)Mini Magic Coloring Book 5) Chickenless Chicken Bag ( Egg Bag routine - Thanks John Cooper) 6) Mini Pom Pom purchased at Hocus-Pocus 7) Card on forehead using 1/3rd of a Flash Card Deck from my friends at Creative Magic - I use all the Blue and Red cards from the deck. I have attached a picture of my case. Thanks... and I am still looking for ideas -stephen Click here to view attached image. |

-stephen Posted: Feb 21, 2009 3:11pm Matthew, I can't believe you have so much to set up... You look young, I am an old man and can no longer haul such a show. I am a believer in character driven shows that pack VERY small and can still entertain five minutes in / three minutes out -stephen Click here to view attached image. |

Well, I'm inspired. I have a 50 lb. suitcase on wheels that folds open into a six foot wide table with three layers of trick surfaces, plus a 30 lb. smaller strongbox for everything I can't fit into the larger box. These carry enough to do my regular magic/juggling/puppetry/balloon-animal show, plus enough to vary the show in case I see children who saw me the week before, also enough to pack both my 3-6 year old tricks and my 5-12 year old tricks. But I feel my joints and back aching as you probably do, Stephen, and the idea of a show that small has me intrigued.
Still, it is hard to think about putting aside the old friends I have been working with for 20 years! Maybe I will start a new post with this very idea...paking light, playing big! -Steve |

Do any of you perform the routines from Quentin Reynolds' 5 Minutes with a pocket handkerchief? It looks like it packs small, and from what I've heard, plays big. Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Throw in a spider pen and some red/green napkins and you have a 4 minute make a rose/floating rose routine.
