I'm looking instructions on tying a helpers arm up with rope and then the rope "magically" goes through the arm with the knots still intacted. I used to do this trick 20 years ago but can't for the life of me remember how I tied it or what book I would have got it out of.

I used to call it the Poor Man's Arm Chopper and I would especially use it when working younger kids shows. The regular arm chopper I had at the time would have been too scary for them.

It's a variation of "Grandmother's Necklace" with a different knot tie. The knot tied is not tricky- it's a regular knot, but it's how you display the rope loops after the "penetration." It is described as a "Rope Through Neck" trick on page 377 of Stewart James' Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks, but the same principle can be used with the wrist(s).

It doesn't have to be the GN principle. I think there is a version of rope or silk through a spectators arm, but I'm not sure if the knot remains.

There's got to be a version in the Ency of Rope Tricks, but I'm not in front of my copy to look.

There is a version of a silk through arm, and the knot/loop of silk remains after the penetration in Wilson's Complete Course. Similar methods are also in Tarbell v1 & 3. These methods might not work too well with a rope.

One could also adapt a rope through neck, by tying a knot after the move. It just won't be very stable before the penetration (to fix that, we're back to the GN principle)

I learned it from CCIM, and hold the bottom of the spectator's arm, bracing the k/l until I'm ready to pull it through, and the final knot remains.

A variation on magician's clothesline works well too. I used it to "saw a woman in half" with.
