Hi Everyone,
I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the Magic Community. I know Bob Sheets, and he knows me! I have been fortunate enough to call him my friend for over 35 years. I have actually worked with him and gained from watching him work over the years. So many of you have already stated how Bob has inspired you and helped make your own performances better. He is a great performer and teacher. His lectures, DVD's, and notes are real treasures. I, too, learned so much from watching him perform. He is a giving and genuine guy. One of my favorite stories does not relate to Magic, but it tells much about the man. I was working with Bob and J. C. Wagner at Marco's Italian Lounge in Coronado, California. The bar was hopping and all three of us were exhausted at the end of the night. After Bob and J. C. cleaned up and did the liquor inventory we all departed for some well deserved sleep. Sunday morning found us ready for breakfast. Bob announced that HE was going to make “Eggs Benedict” for everyone as he had finally learned how to make Hollandaise sauce. Bob knew that Suzanne (my girlfriend at the time and now my wife for over 35 years) and I were quite good “home cooks” and he wanted to show off. Bob expertly cooked the poached eggs; lightly sauted the Canadian Bacon; and then toasted the English muffins to perfection. It was time to prepare the all important Hollandaise. This sauce is a delicate balance of butter, egg yolks, lemon juice, mustard, and a touch of hot sauce. This delicious concoction can easily “break” and become a distasteful mess. Bob started with a pound of butter! Suzanne and I looked at each other as we knew this would make an amount of sauce that would feed a small army and questioned Bob. He stated that this was the way he was going to do it. He whisked the ingredients together—and the sauce “broke”. To our horror, Bob poured the mess done the drain and began again. There is an easy fix for this, but Bob wanted to show us he knew how to make Hollandaise and took out another pound of butter. He “broke” this sauce, too. More butter, eggs, etc. came out of the refrigerator. Three pounds of butter later, I could not take it any more. I jumped up and threw in a few ice cubes and whisked the mess back into a lovely delicious sauce. Breakfast was served which we all enjoyed. For those of you that know Bob, he had that sad-eyed puppy dog look for the rest of the day. I love you Bob. Suzanne does too! She remembers the first kiss on the cheek you talked her into giving you. Bob Sheets is a treasure. As I said before, I am lucky to know him. Respectfully, Paul Green |
