Sean Connery wore a Rolex in Goldfinger. Very subdued it was. Not gaudy at all.

Just to clarify: my Rolex is a Air-King--the bottom of the line in stainless steel. I use it to tell time, not to pimp my wrist.

Michael-
At the risk of interrupting the off-topic diatribes of the fashion cops, a thought on your OP: You may have a bit of bad timing, the price of gold is up, so you will pay according to the current spot price and the dealer may not wish to negotiate. On the other hand, given the likely economics to come, unless the government intervenes the price of gold should continue to rise- hence a possible good investment. It is hard to win with a trade-in. I remember my dad walking away from a car purchase when he asked the salesman for the "wholesale to wholesale" figures including what he was actually getting for his trade-in. The guy told him. In other words, the watch price is likely tied to the trade-in allowance, which the dealer ups to make it look good. Consider taking this out of the mix and ask for the wholesale cost. There are a number of web sites that will give you a reasonable idea of what the watch you want should cost. Google is your friend. Ask if you can put the watch in "lay away" if that concept still exists. It will freeze the price and give you a way to pay off the extra while ensuring the watch is not sold to someone else. Hope this helps... Jim

Hey guys,
I went to the store today, and got the manager to bring the price down, from $4,200 to 2,300. That's $1900 off, and she is not charging me tax for the watch. Thanks guys for your help. Doug, the brand of the watch is Geneve, it's solid 14K gold, with a rectangular face. Very nice and classic design, it looks like the kind of watch a mobster would wear Michael |

Did we forget the $1400 trade in? That would make it $500 off.
I saw Bugsy Segals watch, you should see the woman who owned it...yowza... and it wasn't a rectangular faced gold watch. |

Made sense to me, what with so much stuff that is plated in 14k- I read it to mean it is 14k all the way thru...
At any rate, sounds like a great watch and a great deal- way to go! Jim

And you're propably right Jim. I was thinking about plating. Over 50% gold, its a good deal. The band is also gold and not leather I take it? My advice is to check the manufacturer, find out what kind of experience users have. Generally Swiss watches are a good choice.

My watch is made of some sort of metal! There are two hands on it, the big one rotates the entire face of the watch every 60 minutes and that causes the little hand to shift to the next number.

Gotta be a Mickey Mouse watch- those are the only ones I have seen with actual hands...

A good watch is like an excellent pair of shoes. You pay more up front, but you get a longer lifespan out of the product. I find that if you cry once and pony up the cash the first time, you will be happier in the long run. The same could be said about magic, watches, clothes etc. ultimatly you get what you pay for.

Ahhhh....but a good watch doesn't have to cost thousands of dollars....

No it doesn't. People buy watches for 10.00 at Wal Mart everyday and could care less. People pay 5000 for Breitlings as well. Just depends on your definition of "good" and what you want out of a watch.

When you pay that much you are not buying a watch, you are getting jewelery that happens to have a watch face built into it.

Trivia question! For those of you who are not into the status symbol of a rolex, as if that means anything, say a guy like I use to be offers to sell you a rolex, what is the quickest way to tell if it is a real Rolex or a fake Rolex?

Use to be you could tell by the sweep of the second hand, but that is not the case anymore. You can now get copies that look just like real. Also, some importers, especially in Hong Kong, where lots of people think they get Rolex bargains, have "non standard" Rolexes, that have no warranty and are not sanctioned by Rolex.
Depends on who you believe as to whether or not they are made by Rolex. The very best way to tell, is to try to sell it or trade it in... Not nearly so much angst with Patek Phillipe. Jim

Well, it has been 20 years since I sold the fakes in bars but back then, yes indeedy, the second hand was the give away.

I have a friend who always wore one of these, just so he could pretend to "go off" and in his frustration throw it against the wall or sidewalk to the amazed chagrin of onlookers- especially those who thought he always wore a Rolex...
