Im surprised no one has brought this up. The GREAT movie, "man on wire" (http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=289026&forum=32) won an oscar last night. The french (?) guy who did the walking ran up on stage said a few things, then vanished a coin AND balanced the oscar on his chin.
see the movie

I heard about it on NPR this morning.
Perhaps juxtaposing the coin vanish and the statuette balancing made the former look more like juggling than magic. If so, magicians (and, possibly, laymen) would find it far less remarkable; hence, few remarks (here). |

You might be correct, but I just meant it as in a "something cool" at the oscars other than the typical BS.
How often do you get to see that stuff on live tv, without expecting it?

But still, on the oscars. It was at least well done, better than the whole "uncle" version...

Agreed sir! Very cool indeed.
Was there a magic element in the film? |

No, he did some coin stuff and a cigarette vanish I think, but it was just part of his thing. He also juggles, on a tightrope..

I rented this DVD about a month ago. If you like documentary style movie making with a bit of an artsy edge, you will love this. I did and that was well before I even knew it was up for Best Documentary Oscar.
It is the story of Philippe Petit, a French street performer/high wire walker/artist/magician. It cronicles his daring and very illegal highwire crossing of the twin towers in the early seventies and how he and his crew had to sneak in the buildings illegaly, sleep in them, use phony id's to gain access and finally in the wee hours do the impossible which is to set a high wire over the two tallest structures in the world at that time and make a daring walk at mornings light. He spent almost an hour or more on that wire while the world watched, the police taunted him to come back and he would tease them by getting very close to the edge and then walk right back on out again. It was a great movie and was very inspiring. I highly recommend it. His French drop was cool but balancing the Oscar on his nose at the end of the award acceptance was better. Tony Chris
As magicians we create what onlookers call magic. If they truly believe in what we have created for them to witness then magic is real!!!

Petit was interviewed by Scott Simon yesterday (NPR's Weekend Edition). He's done magic for a long time. He told the story about getting stopped by US Customs at the airport (prior to his Twin Towers walk) and they found a bag with things that they couldn't identify. He told them that it was his magician's bag and he performed 20 minutes of magic for them to prove it, backing up the Customs' lines in the process.
A very interesting performer... I'll have to rent the movie.
