After quite some time of searching I was finally able to get myself a real old-fashioned straight razor. Any users here that would be able to give me some tips on proper use?

You're kidding, right? A drunk like me shouldn't even own one of those Mach 3 thingamajigs. I'm lucky I don't choke myself to death when brushing my teeth.

Straight razors seem to be in vogue right now. There are quite a few online videos of people giving shaving demos.
An old-time barber might show you how in person. I was told recently by a Massachusetts barber that to get a license to shave you must shave a balloon without popping it. And, also in MA, a barber's razor must have one-time-use disposable blades.

Straight razor users? Why would their sexual preference influence their grooming preferences?
Ooohhh... You meant the razor is straight....

I've been thinking about getting one for years. It seems so... I don't know... old-fashioned and civilized. Let us know what you find.

When I went to barberschool we used them. Assuming that you have the one that has to be sharpened rather than just sliding in a blade I say get a good stroop. When you sharpen it you run it on the leather part to smooth the edge because you'll have little rough spots and those are what cut you. The blade isn't any more dangerous than other razors if used right and it is true we use to practice on a balloon to get the angle right. If you are turned to in you pop the balloon, if it is out you just smear cream.

Well everyone (including my dad and my better half) seems to think its extremely dangerous, but lets face it, you shave with an up-down movement instead of horizontal so you're not likely to cut your throat.
It would also be in vogue to say I am doing this to be green, but my facehair very much resembles barb wire and the only really good shaves I have ever gotten were with a straight razor in a barber shop. With a Mach 3 I am good for maybe 5 hours after the shave and my skin-just like my dad's-is too sensitive for an electric; besides they're mostly worthless on my hair. So I thought if its worked with me so well before, why not switch to one. It cant be that difficult, 10s of thousands of men have done it before. Granted, like with George, the nostalgia appeals to me. And now that Pakar mentioned it, maybe my boyfriend doesn't like it because its a straight razor...I forgot to check the gay razors section at the drugstore.... LOL

As long as it is sharp and in good shape you don't have a problem. It does make for a cool means to cut throats though, which is always a plus.

I remember my dad using one when I was a boy. he also had a mug and a brush.
Myself, I stick to my good ol' Mach 3. Nothing feels better than the feeling you get when your done with a good, clean shave. (Well, almost nothing. I can think of at least one thing.)

I went back to a double edge safety razor several years ago. Try classicshaving.com for info etc.

Oh I see. "Straight" modifies "razor" not "users". Well that's a different question altogether...

Speaking of razors it iritates me that they price women and mens safety razors at different prices when at the blade point there is absolutely no difference. Hey, I think someone needs to make a movie where a woman shaves her legs with a silver straight razor, the image would be cool.

The best advice I can offer is to approach from behind. No matter how quick you are if you slash from the front you will get some form of spatter from the arterial....oh, you meant for shaving?

When I was a lil' kid a barber killed himself in Atlanta in his shop with a straight razor. I didn't go in or see anything but just hearing about it from my dad freaked me out....I'm still freaked out by the idea. I bet the cut was smooooth though.

I'd hate to of seen his burst balloon collection. Bet the last thought running through his head was "My skin is tougher than latex, I can do this, steady....steady...."

Crap! Pakar Ilusi used my joke 6 hours before I even thought of it. Man I hate when that happens.
John PS Sorry Pakar. My failure to read.
