FINALLY a Collectors I can do. It's easy enough without taking the punch out of it in comparison to other Collectors, Ed, (Eddini), C.H.

Not a bad trick however I would suggest practicing more before you film it. Just a thought!

I agree, I did a run through with the magazine, then without, then filming it. It's so easy though. Spreading the bottom card is a bit tricky and I saw a little adjustment I did, but I don't think laymen will catch it. I agree though. He specifically wanted a collectors without the very difficult moves. David Regal, on his first tapes has awesome collectors routines. I'm like that, if I see a trick that is beyond my level, I try to re-work it so I can do it without compromising the effect. As a Magician that's one of my gifts, whereas patter is kinda a weakness. Just check out Switching Sandwiches, and Darwin' Ortiz's One-Handed Poker Deal. You'll see where I make them my own a little easier and different patter. The nest trick I film "The Invisible Card" from Card College 3, I won't need much practice as I do that one a lot and it's a great trick. As always I'll do a run through and camera check and start filming. I agree my friend though. Thank you, Ed, (Eddini), C.H.

Yes as I said speading the bottom card while "Keeping other cards straight" is difficult. Spreading the top card is easy to the right, but ONLY spreading the bottom card is hard. The only reason I just did it because I don't have the best memory so I did it while it was VERY FRESH in my mind. Maybe I could buckle the bottom card and pull it over. I DID add finding the Aces though. In the L.R. it says already have them to the side. I like finding them though better. Anyone else see this routine in the Jan. issue and do it? You cannot find a better collectors that is that simple, but when thinking about it I use to do Cannible Kings from ETMCM volume 1, which is in theory a collectors type of effect. I have to relearn it. You see in my mind, I can ONLY hold so many tricks. I learn a new one I lose a old one. I'm CONSTANTLY "Re-Learning" tricks. Tricks to relearn for me is Cannible Kings (A very entertaining card trick), Skinner's Monte, Aldo's Mama Mia Card Routine, Reset, Skinner's 3 different ways & Tell Tale Aces. Anyone else like me, where they "Know lots of tricks" but often have to "Re-Learn". I remember Skinner's Monte took me a hour. I got the Malone Tape, but he's left handed and kinda holds and displays (for me) the cards weird. Oh yes Maxi-Twist, I gotta relearn. At some point you'll see those tricks uploaded. Thanks, Ed, (Eddini), C.H.
P.S. Yes I know I talk a little in the beginning of each tape but that's primarily FOR YOU MAGICIANS as far as telling history of tricks...etc ONLY in case you didn't know is all.

Is George Hills on here? Itt's hard to re-shoot because this thread becomes nill. Unless I re-shot it and posted it in the thread versus the subject, and of course on youtube I'd delete that version. Thanks for getting me do think...lol, Ed, (Eddini), C.H.

I wish I could watch these, but they're still way to long Ed. If you can get em BELOW 2 min, I'll give this a looky see.

Ben I don't know what to tell you, I got my talking down, but really a collectors in under 2 minutes? It'd be rushed and sloppy I think. Thanks for your comment though BEn, Rock On, Ed, (Eddini), C.H.

If so why not watch mine? I'm working on my patter as it's a weak point. Don't you want to be entertained as well as see a trick. So I guess I don't get it. One thing I do, DO and admit because I post most of my stuff here, I LOVE to educate. I don't know what people know or don't know, but at times I'll go into the origins of a trick. That's the TEACHER in me. I even do it when performing in front of crowds but on different things obviously. Even when doing Hypnosis during the "Invisible Hypnotist" routine I'll turn to the audience and give a 30 second lecture, that they REALLY can't see me and how the subconcious works. I love to teach, and even give props and put my personality into what I do. I'm NOT mad, but just explain yourself. Would you watch a David Regal 4 minute Collectors and not mine and why except for the fact he's better and got tapes, what's the difference. Thanks Ben, Ed. (Eddini), C.H.

Hey Ed,
Got you message, which is the same as posted above, and you asked me to comment publicly. Happily. To put it bluntly- you are no Regal. Ricky Jay had a two hour show, but I don't. Know why? I'm no Ricky Jay. You're right- I would watch a 4 min routine of Regal's, and you are correct in assuming it's because he's better. He is. But he's also better then I am... for whatever that's worth. Do I want to be entertained? Of course. For me though, when your video's drag on, they don't. I DO like some of your work, when it's TIGHT. It's not a matter of length you see- I'd rather watch a fantastic 2 hour show then a crappy one minute piece. We've talked quite a bit in the past, mostly through private message, and told you what I'll tell you again: Everything either adds to the experience or it doesn't. Lecturing, going off on tangents, and everything else that doesn't make the trick BETTER makes it worse. Cut this video down to 1 min or so and I'll happily watch it. You can deflect by telling me you've been doing this for years (Though in this case you haven't) but the truth is this- time doesn't guarantee quality. It can be better and I've told you a way I feel would make it so. And I've done it as a friend. With love, BT

I think the crediting at the beggining is fine, and the end you do keep it short and sweet. Sure the handeling could improve a touch. But (and I know ben is a great guy) but maybe he dosn't have the right to say 'cut this don to one minute' if he's never even watched the vid?
I don't know, just a thought. |

I'm not that great a guy...
An opening line should act as a hook- it's purpose is to create immediate interest in the routine that will follow (among other purposes). I watched the first minute, then gave up and posted my comment. If you want to perform for humans, an enviable goal (I hope to one day, if I can find some) then you need to learn to "open strong". I'm a magic junkie, the guy who has all the forte tapes on his ipod and watches them while walking, and even I couldn't get past this. My comments, if you'll notice, weren't about the actual trick (choice of material, handling, etc) but on the presentation- and I do think I'm qualified to say the presentation wasn't good: I came to watch a show and left because it was no good. That, in itself, should be comment enough. Additionally, if Ed posted a small number of videos I would be happy to watch them at almost any length, just to get a feel for this guy (I love seeing Café-guys work!). Since he's been posting a glut of stuff, most of which I've watched (even the 3 color change one which took over 3 minutes!- how is that possible?!?!?!) I didn't feel the need to invest the time if he couldn't make it interesting. Yet, I find the time to post all this baloney... I'm an enigma. Wrapped in a puzzle. Deep-fried in a conundrum.

Watched it Ed! Here are my comments....
Yeah it was a bit too long. That can be fixed! I think the opening shuffle sequence looked too careful....making it look like a controlled shuffle. A simple shuffle that would protect your "you know what" would suffice. Now in hindsight, if it was indeed a real shuffle like you intended it to look like, you could at least use an ace production sequence to make it look like you can indeed find the aces from a shuffled deck. Just dealing it from the top made it look like a set up from the start. Just my opinion. To begin this trick....perhaps just have the aces in different positions of the deck. A simple F shuffle then look for the aces...heck the shuffle is not even that important at this stage of the trick unless you do an impressive ace prod. Regarding the presentation....I think you tend to over explain everything. My mentor use to tell me that many years ago. He called it..."magic for the blind" By that he meant I was talking about moves or gestures that can already be seen. I think he made a lot of sense. I was like that myself. Regarding the credits in the beginning... I appreciate you mentioning the people who worked on this great effect. However, performing publicly...I think it makes it anti climactic at the get go. Also ... If it is the second time you did it...or if you just learned it...I think it should not be presented until it is second nature. I must say however that you did not do a bad job. I admire your passion and I applaud you for it. I have been doing magic since I was 7, I'm 41 now....became dead serious for the past 20 some years.... and really crazy for the past 15 years but I still listen to my mentors and adjust to make my work better. Good luck Ed and never give up. I hope this helped somehow. Mabuhay and best from Manila! Actually I'm in L.A. now...ha ha ha! rannie PS we all have our own vocal affectations... that's fine..perhaps try some highs and lows...change the vocal phase here and there. Think Push and pull .ension and relaxation. That should spice things as well. Later!

Ed you're a great guy, you seem to be improving since past videos of what I watched. However with that said, you said you like to teach or generally come off as a teacher, that's not something many people like at the Café.
As a developing magician as we all are, we have to be keen on learning. That means taking constructive criticism. I don't mean to bash but to become a better performer and showman we must always learn and ask for advice. I think you are truly an interesting individual and you are entertaining to watch. There are many people on this forum giving you very helpful advice. Keep going and never stop!!! Cheers Francis |

I agree great advice. I just have a need to teach, but I'm not a mind-reader though I play one so it's hard to know what people know or not. I DO get what you're saying. You have to remember I'm a street performer arguably the hardest in Magic. If I don't deliver I don't get tipped, simple as that. NOT to be defensive. Ben I'm sorry I didn't hook you in, you can't please everyone. On a serious note though the trick itself collectors, can it be done in 2 minutes? Possibly. I know I'm no Regal, he has books, videos and performed at the castle. He's brilliant. Again I go to the point, I'm not use to performing by myself. I shine in front of other people as I feed off their energy. I can't it seems to drive that home enough. As I said the people doing the documentary years ago, want to film me live now as I told him I do Hypnotism. In those videos THEY WILL BE LONG as I will start from the induction to the 20 minute routine which is hilarious. Rannie as far as productions I'm no good at them. I've tried the Piet Fortone and others, that why with Macdonald's Aces, the aces start face-up on the deck, and I just deal them out and I DO have dream of aces, but my routine is more the Ammar ETMCM. For me if it's not easy I don't bother. I love easy magic, that's powerful such as Red Hot Mama. Easy but powerful. The faro has been the only thing I've kept up with. I normally don't do this I will re-do this but faster and post it here on this thread taking your dvice, and tell me what you think. I'm really not being defensive, and love learning. Maybe our definitions of defensive are different. To me defensive is yelling, cussing and getting in a huff. To me I EXPLAIN, and try to be respectful. The Ace Find was my idea. In the Ring it says already have them out I was just trying to make it more impressive. Yes my shuffle was too controlled. I've never admitted this but I get VERY nervous performing for Magicians, ask my IBM...lol. So that plays a Factor as I know ALL Magic uploads I post here. Again I humble thank you, for REAL, Ed, (Eddini), C.H.
P.S. I think it's only fair to list where I learned this so you all can learn it.
