I'm doing a gig tonight and the host phoned to say, "I've seen you before...but, can you do your act with MY cards?" Answer: YES! So, although he'll probably supply a grubby old plastic coated deck - yuch - that's what I'll be using... And, I LOVE it that way. The responses are/is always better with a borrowed deck. But, 90% of my gigs are with my own cards because not many households (if I'm doing gigs in private houses) seem to "carry" cards anymore. They did 30 years ago when I started! Now, it's all X-boxes, Nintendo, WI's (or whatever) etc!!

Bill Malone does Sam The Bellhop with his own stacked deck and all they remember is the constant shuffling and how funny it was.

I guess in the States you do have that advantage (not sure what to call it) of having Bicycle cards as the common deck out there.
Here in Australia we have small, plastic, made in China cards which are usually not smooth enough to attempt a fan, let alone a decent DL. |

Just arrange ahead of time to have the client provide you with a new sealed deck(s) for your performance. If they give you a grubby deck, adapt your performance. Harry Lorayne's "Mated" and "Out of this Universe" are great effects that can be done with any beat up complete deck.

Thanks, Purist. Yes, POWERHOUSE is a good (STRONG) effect with a borrowed SHUFFLED deck. Sneaky method, eh? Paul Gordon

They care if the Batman and the joker look 'real'. They don't want the guy to take of his mask and say "I am not a superhero... I'm just an actor!". Likewise, when you do magic, you want it to look as real as possible. People actually appreciate it more when they have no clue. If they have a solution ('he must use special cards...'), the will appreciate it less than if there was no way! In the same way, when you do magic, they care it looks real. If it does not look like real mag like a gimmick, you will not appreciate it much. |
