Got a peek at something pretty special recently and boy is it a treasure chest.
You guys know Scott Guinn here on the Café, he stops by the coin forum here every so often and it's good reason he does as within all his fine magic the guy is also a pretty darn good coin man. Not just a trick or two but a whole book worth of effects he has done throughout his magical career. He decided to grab the best of his plentiful this & that from previous works and bring them together in one effort, his latest work, "My Best To You" a book of coin magic. Besides the book reflecting Scott's regular penchant for excellence in production and instruction, it is very conversational and comprehensive and tackles a battery of coin effects that aren't difficult to get down, have plenty of plot to them and are engaging and fun to do. Not to mention there's a little of that Steve Dusheck inventiveness in The Great Scott...This guy is a real tinkerer and is not against using a tool or even making one to help make the magic happen in a big way. Even that is easy enough to do with his simple enough instructions. It's a lot of good stuff, well explained with clear photos and Scott's easy-understanding way of teaching. He's got something in there for everyone, every level. Clever stuff with everything from lollypops to a giant ring to a horseshoe wallet to a magic salt shaker that Goshman would be proud of. Oh, and yes there are loads of coins in every routine. These are not short quickie effects and you won't fall asleep on them either...They are progressive in nature and built up in phases of more and more amazement. Just well thought-out magic from a guy that has done it all from closeup to stage. There are 13 effects in this gem of a book. If you just master 2-3 of them you're loaded for bear. All of them are creative and take you through the classics as well as Scott just freelancing as he puts forth in "Great Scott's Flurry." Some of my favorites are "UN Coins Thru Table," "Eye Con," "Worm Hole" and "Sucker Trick." You'll find your own favorites in this ecletic bag of coin tricks but Scott shows you how all the way through. And it's not any such knucklebusting stuff, just good doable coin magic that will amaze people in a variety of settings. There's even a sleight index of coin moves and a lot of the props you will probably already have. I love the layout of this book from the first word to the last. This is some of his best coin work from over the decades he has presented in books, shows and presentations. It's real world stuff that has withstood the test of time from a good guy and accomplished magician. It's well written, gives credit where it's due and should be on everyone's magic book shelf. It'll be coming out soon at a great price (and you know I like great prices) from Scott's website at http://www.scottfguinn.com as a download. Easy, easy, easy...How cool is that? Stay on the look out for this one real soon, a great value from The Great Scott. -Mb

Hi guys!
Thanks MB, for your kind words. I truly appreciate it. The book will be on my website shortly, along with a few other new things. Give me about a week, and it should be available for purchase. Griff, thanks for your nice words as well--much appreciated. Pauldella, my last name is pronounced Gwin. Just like "Quinn" but with a G instead of a Q. The two books I previously published on coin magic were "Great Scott! It's Coin Magic!" and "Profiles in Coinage." I sold the rights to these books and both are out of print. However, I retained the rights to excerpt material from the books, and that's what this book is--a compilation of some of my best routines from those books, edited, in many cases substantially updated, and put together in one package. So even if you have the previous versions, you find some new tips, finesees, extra phases, and different handlings that weren't in the originals. Plus, better writing and editing. Anyway, thanks again for the nice words. I'll let you know when it's available. It'll be a PDF instant download, and probably around $20-$25. Posted: Feb 28, 2009 7:08am ------------------------------ The book is now up on my site--got it done faster than I thought, thanks to a free add-in to Publisher I was able to download that prints as a PDF, saving all the hyperlinks. It's on the books page of my site, price is $22.50. The first 50 who buy a copy will get a $10 credit on any other downloads on my site. Just send me an email or PM telling me what you want, and I'll get it to you. Thanks for your support, guys!

I just got a hold of Scott's new coin book, and it's filled with excellent routines.
As Scott mentions in the preface, there's nothing in here that is a knucklebuster. Something that keeps many magicians from performing coin magic is the level of difficulty --in Scott's book you'll find something (if not many things) within your skill level, such as a stunning Thieves and Sheep routine. As I read the manuscript I was struck by Scott's encyclopedic knowledge of magic, so he's able to come up with neglected, little-known moves that are killer, such as a variation of the paddle move that I wasn't aware of, the Hirata master move, an easy-to-make pull, a devious coin display that conceals a jumbo coin, etc. I've been working on a master's degree for the last couple of years, so I haven't been performing magic. As I get ready to start performing again, two routines are going into my repertoire --Scott's coins to glass and the Wormhole routine. The coins to glass has clever thinking and a powerful ending that would play well in a parlor setting. The wormhole routine is a novel plot that reminds me of Shoot Ogawa's purse frame routine (only Scott's came out first, with credits to David Penn). A coin disappears and reappears into a "wormhole" represented by a ring. If you do a mini rings routine, all you need is a half dollar and a jumbo coin and you're good to go. There's been a lot of interest in CSB routines, and Scott's is very magical and clean, without any trips to the pockets. All in all, it's a great book, filled with magic that's accessible to anyone. |

I would like to vouch for Scott's products. I haven't got this one yet (3 kids, birthdays, Blackpool convention.. blah blah blah!!), but previous stuff has been top notch.
Real world, workable, and most importantly, CLEARLY described and illustrated, so you don't struggle to understand the routines. Its nice to read a few thoughts and experiences from Scott as well. I'll pick this one up when I have a few spare 'sheckles', even without a detailed review. Such is the quality of previous output. |

Scott,
You mention on your site that this is volume 2 in the "My Best" series. Did I miss out on volume 1, or am I just not looking in the right place for it? |

I believe that you will find out that "Magic that’s FUN... for Profit!" is Volume 1 of his "My Best" series. It sure seems like it according to the description.

No, that's incorrect. "Magic that's fun..." is the lecture note booklet from my last lecture tour. I turned it into a PDF and put it on my site.
Volume 1 is My Best to You, Volume 1: Cards, and contains 13 of my best card routines from: Officiously Yours Never Miss a Trick Great Scott! It's Card Magic! Magishing My Way You'll Be Pleasantly Surprised It's not on the site yet because I had to re-shoot a few photos, but it will be there shortly. I also just added Marked for Death, my book on my do-it-yourself marked deck. And in the next week or so I'll be adding a big book with all-new material (except for one routine in it, which has some extra stuff) called: A Little Something.

Do yourself a favor and hunt down a copy of "You'll Be Pleasantly Surprised!" It has all you need to know about the GUB.

Thanks, guys!
Regarding the GUB: It was in several of my early books, and it is also available as an ebook on my site--currently the last item on the books page. But if I'm understanding Chris correctly, he's asking if it will be available in video format at some point, and the answer is yes. I haven't had the technology to do that in the past, but I intend to make a video download available on my site that will demo/teach the GUB.

I downloaded the coin manuscript and found music to my ears:
"you don‘t need ―palms of steel‖ and you won‘t ―bust your knuckles‖ with my stuff. There‘s a simple reason for that. Both of my hands, both thumbs, and many of my fingers have been broken (or badly dislocated) at least once; some multiple times. I simply cannot physically do things that some of the ―big boys‖ can. I try to get around this with subtlety, clever routining, and the use of gaffs" I have had the same problems with my hands. I LOVE watching the stuff, but I can't do it. I juts started reading, but it's filled with photos and I like Scott's writing style ( I'm dyslexic, so writing has to be very easy on my eyes and brain for me to 'get it" ). BRAVO!!

Hey, thanks Chris! I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you find my writing understandable. Did that make sense? I'm not sure I put that clearly...
