A martial artist friend of mine is fascinated by this possibility. He heard that some old-time gamblers could throw them in the faces of their opponent to create an opportunity to draw a gun or make their escape.
Can some people really throw cards like this, or is it just movie fantasy? |

You can throw a card very hard and fast to cut someone if you wanted too, but don't know why you would want too..Some people can throw them so hard that they can stick the card in a watermelon and so forth.. but again don't know why you would really want to throw them at someone...

Look at the trailer for Xtreme Beginners 2, one of the sections there teaches the card throwing you're referring to.
This is so weird, I was actually just thinking about this myself yesterday |

Yep, Ricky Jay is your man.
To my knowledge he is the foremost authority on card throwing around today, though I could be wrong. He's a brilliant magician as well! |

I can scale cards after a fashion, but as I'm no Ricky Jay, if I wanted to use them as a weapon it would probably work best by throwing the entire deck still in the box...

Ricky Jay was on mythbusters testing this myth and the myth turned out to be...

Jay's book "Cards as Weapons" is out-of-print but well worth searching out on ebay.

There are videos on youtube of Ricky Jay penetrating a watermelon (both the outside and the inside when it is split open to show the red)

I have drawn blood from the jugular from about 10 paces to the point of blood barely dripping down the neck and dirtying the collar of a shirt.
That is about as perfect of a throw as I've gotten, and it was pretty stupid (though at least the guy had glasses on) Other than blinding someone, that is about as nasty of a cut as I think you are going to get. |

Ricky Jay is the authority on this subject as before mentioned. Just youtube his name and you'll see him tossing cards over a building, slicing a watermelon, snapping pencils, etc.
Lee Scott has a very dangerous book titled "The Magician's Arsenal" which details how to make cards into actual weapons, that could and would[/b kill you. The edges of the cards are razor sharp and would go [b]through the watermelon instead of into it... This book is filled with dangerous items, is out of print, and nothing in the book should be built unless your a highly trained professional. Even then, it should be used for entertainment purposes only!

I know for a fact that there is many a watermelon out there living in constant fear. People talk about it and yet they do nothing!! Wake up people and take a stand!

I looked up the MythBuster episode, and of course it confirmed you can't kill someone with a playing card. But I'll bet it sure hurts, so beware angry gamblers hurling cards...

I also saw this mythbusters, and although it was busted I am sure if one has mastered the aiming part then he/she can do some serious damage to the face area.
There are lots of better things that serve as better throwing utensils...such as the Chinese star (martial arts guys will know the exact name for this) which is a flat piece of metal shaped like a star with sharp ends.
People have been calling me "Yu" lately. I don't know, must be Chinese.

Answering the original question - I think the answer is yes. I've been on the receiving end of a card throw and its hurts. Never argue with a bored magician...
