I have a bad hip, I broke it when I was younger & had surgery to fix it. Now as I get older, I have good days & bad days. It's very arthritic & I have trouble walking sometimes.
So I was wondering if anyone else uses a cane & how does it effect you performing? I realize that performing sitting down is an easy solution. I was just wondering how others deal with it? Thanks, Mike Please, no vanishing, appearing, disappearing or dancing cane jokes |

I use one on occassion but try not to, of course at times there is no choice. You know, when I perform on stage I tend to be pain free and I was told it was adrenilin (sp). I've not done strolling since the cane has been required so I can't comment as to that.

Thanks magicsanta, I usually just grin & bear it. I did 3 hours of strolling a while back & I was seriously hurting by the end.

Aleve, Ibuprofin, what ever works. I limp at times but refuse to use a cane. I do have one that folds up small but I never carry it anymore. Makes me wish I was a vent. at times.
MagicSanta is correct about being on stage. Painless. But the second the rush goes away the pain sets in. I broke my leg in six places almost six years ago. The darndest thing is it doesn't hurt where I broke it but where they drilled the hole to hammer the rod into the bone that held it all together. |

Strolling would likely really hurt me but I'm in pain constantly and have built up a high tollerance. I was helped by an orthopedic insert for my shoes (expensive) and I found a type of shoe that helps.

As a 99.9%-kid-birthday-party performer, I found many advantages to doing shows sitting down. The greatest one was that the kids (short) were far less afraid of me (tall and big and loud). Having to sit, I lost some of my favorite "bits", but found others.
However, my lessened mobility eventually led to two big factors that made it "time to retire." One was merely practical - it was just too much to get into homes with non-accessible designs (don't you hate those new townhouses where the garage is the whole ground level, and a steep front stairway is the only way in?). It came home to me when, one winter, every stairway to the front porch was icy, and it took a big guy on either side of me to get me up 4 lousy steps. The other was a safety issue: every now and then you have a crazy or hostile customer, and the last of those made me realize how dangerous it is to be unable to leave unassisted. |

Santa, it might be the adrenalin, however I think its actually endorphin. Endorphins work as natural pain relievers and are often referred to as "pleasure hormones". Likely you enjoy performing so your endorphin levels go up and thus relieve the pain.

Might be the Gin as well..... I thought Endorphins were those Flipper fish that jump up and go through hoops.

Could be...the drink of (some) Gods...I love my Bombay Sapphire. And who knows, endorphins might jump thru hoops...in enough quantities they surely will make you jump thru a loop or two.
