Cirque had a vision of a magic show long before Cris's popularity. Its part of their roots so to speak. The problem is that anybody could play the part of the magician in that show. But someone came up with the bright idea to cast a well known magician. And Cris is as close to their image as we have in magic, so they cast him. Hoping to capitalize on both their own name and his. This came with a price, that I don't think they counted on. And that is the magic aspect. Once he was cast, the show had certain expectations based on what people saw from him on TV.
No live show could ever live up to that, unless you stooged the entire audience. I think they would be better off to cancel the show, get rid of Cris, and hire a professional actor (non magician) to play the part. Maybe revamp the script to make more of a cohesive story. I think there is one magician who would have been better suited to this show other than Cris. And that is Dan Sperry. But only if he had some creative control over the show. His style would be a much better meld as he is less 'rock star' and more ... well...unusual. |

Mvmagic, I had never seen the Terminator, And that was fabulous, now THAT is what I think Chriss is all about! Great theatre and illusion. As I have always said Chriss is a very good performer and unique, he's just in the wrong show!

It is a brilliant piece indeed. I like the mood and also the fact its so refreshingly different from the norm. He really should have kept his unique style.

Chad, they cannot posibily cancel the show, as too much expensive is involved! And they do think his name is the draw. However they are NOT happy with what is happining. The show was built around him, and they think NOONE can replace him. That's this business. Right now I have to go and put a voodoo curse on MM. Rai

Cirque can, and will, do anything they want with the show (while, of course, respecting contractual agreements already in place) The "owner" of Cirque would rather close the show, than for it too become too big a weight around their shoulders. Pride (to a fault), may be the only reason Cirque would (try to) keep it running.
The only surprise to me was that Cirque put Criss into the show in the first place (Criss, or any star performer for that matter). But, then, not knowing how the partnership developed, Cirque may not have had a choice. Cirque shows are traditionally more "production" shows, with a group sense of performance, and energy, which comes from the Cirque's formation and foundation. We have the premiere of the new Cirque show here in April, and of course, they have the Elvis tribute show scheduled to open in Vegas at the end of the year. So the Cirque factory here in Montreal moves on! They have over 3000 employees, with close to 1000 being performers, the Montreal facility is HUGE!!! Blair (from "Cirquetown" - Montreal)

I didn't have time to see BeLIEve while in L.V. last week, but did chat with Criss at Lance Burton's house and said he was looking to buy a home there. So, maybe he feels things will sort out in the show.

With the money he's MADE from the show he can buy a house, that's no guarantee to the longevity of the show.

Hey S.R.,
You said you worked out of town and stayed at the Mount Royale, that is why I asked if it was the downtown hotel. As you can see I do know this hotel (now a high-end mall, offices, and condos), and May Johnson Associates were out of New York with a Montreal office on the Mezz. floor, Tom Auburn, one of our well known magicians (25 yrs on t.v. here) was a booker there. They booked the exclusive Normandie Room upstairs at that hotel with the big bands, not sure if they booked variety there also. Blair

About 7-10 years ago, I assisted the family in conducting his broken wand ceremony, and wrote the obits. for the trade magazines. We were very good friends.

Hello Blair, your right, I didn't make myself clear, I did quite a few Canadian tours, and usually stayed the the town I was working in. But in between I always went back to the Royale. So it is gone? What a shame, it was a beautiful hotel. At the time, I'm not sure if I even knew there were agents there, All I worked for were outside of the hotel, there was a lovely lady, whose name now escapes me, that I loved and two other men. I adored those tours!

I've been quiet for a long time about this whole Criss Angel thing, so let me just say this: Give the guy a break! Here's what I mean- I see zillions upon zillions of folks here bashing Criss and saying that no one should be surprised that his show isn't doing well (at least for now). They say that Criss is no live performer, that an actual live version of "MindFreak" would be impossible. Well, I'll be the first to admit it, I'm shocked that his show isn't a huge success yet!
3 things that are cold hard facts: 1) If you look at Criss's past acheivements before his TV success, there is no question that the man knew what he was doing. Everything he did was new, fresh, and unique. If you don't believe that, look at his fire version of metamorphosis or his Terminator illusion, all done live before a real audience. 2) Criss went with a style all his own, from way back in the beginning. You have to give him credit for blazing his own trail and not trying to be another Copperfield. 3) To those who say that MindFreak could never be done live on stage- notice the "stage" part? This is a bazillion dollar theater where Criss and his staff would have control of every element such as light, fog, the ability to rebuild something on a whim because it's off by a sixteenth of an inch, etc. With the currently available magical technology (and the budget they've got on this one), do you honestly think that it would be impossible for Criss to levitate and do somersaults over the heads of the audience? Seriously, everyone on this forum sholud know that virtually anything imaginable could be done live with the right conditions and enough blank checks. So, I'll also admit that #3 has me wondering why the show apparently isn't doing some things differently. There is no reason why they'd have to openly use trap doors as has been said. The fact that they choose to do so anyway, well, tells me that there must be more to the story. Some have suggested that it's a Cirque thing and not entirely under Criss' control. Maybe he needs a lesson in reading a contract better before he signs it, but to suggest that the show contains the things it does because Criss doesn't know his craft, shows ignorance of Criss Angel. Phil Also, for the record, I am not a fan of camera tricks. I believe that it's cheating if what you do can't be done in front of real people. At that point, you're simply doing what every movie maker does. However, let me ask you this- didn't everyone here, at some point or another, dream of having their own show and the fame that went with it, such as Copperfield or Henning or (insert famous name here)? Even before MindFreak, Criss achieved that and did so in live performances. So, that's certainly no excuse for whatever his reason was to go with the camera tricks, but again, don't discount the guy and say that camera tricks are all he knows. |

As I have already said, Criss was fabulous when he started, then I think he was influenced by Blaine. And went in that direction, even his look was great and unusual. Who knows? I just wish him well.
