This is a fun thing, not brain surgery, or the next big thing, no effect for sale, just a fun thing, nothing to get uptight about, nothing to complain about, just a little fun thing, if you don't like it, that's fine, you don't like it, less fun for you in this world, if you liked it, good for you, fun is all around, enjoy life, or complain and dislike and try to bring people down.
I appreciate the time The Professor took to put this together, he gave of his time for this, and sure it might've been a little long, but it was different, it was meant to be fun, which is what it was meant to be. Take what he's done here, improve it, and perform it. Good times! Sometime ago I did two such experiments on the Café ... it was fun as well, and my attempt at a lesson in creative presentation (which this clearly is in my opinion) in the beginner's section of the Café, that until the downers started setting people straight, the whole thing came to a halt, the fun was over, what a drag....

Except it wasn't a "fun thing", for me. It was a waste of time, for me. I find it interesting that there wasn't any sniping in this thread until somebody said they didn't like it. In other words, it's fine to say what you think as long as it is the same as what Philemon thinks, otherwise you're open to being challenged.
THAT is my only problem. As I said, I didn't like much about the video in question but I was more than happy to not say anything. Until I saw responses like Philemon's, which, for the record, are the basis for all that is wrong with the magic Café in general. Maybe that is fine in your book and you'd rather talk about stuff like "fun" and "experiments", but that kind of attitude and attack should be the first thing you take exception to. But hey, much easier to simply attack those who you disagree with rather than try to have a dialog, huh? Well, not for me. Philemon wants to try to be a bully, let him try on me. So he has three choices: 1.) Apologize for being a jerk, 2.) Try to pull his little stuff on me, or 3.) Run away without facing the facts. I don't know what he will do but I do know what most bullies do when faced down, run like cowards. |

I'm AMAZED!!!!!
Lem ... In several private messages you said that you "HATED EVERYTHING THAT I STAND FOR" .. So why on earth would you actually watch one of my video's? The answer is obvious. So you could complain? Transparent really. Some things are not for everyone. My apologies However ... I don't appreciate the way you are speaking about Philemon!!!!! It's childlike.

Yes, Paul.... The Spell is FREE so you can use the money you saved to buy the girl a few drinks (just in case you need to enhance it's effectiveness ) I should have explained that part.

I agree with Lem. And the arguments like Philemon's "Let's see you do better." are plain stupid. Does everyone who didn't like the video have to record one in order to be qualified to give their "sinful" opinion?
I, too, didn't like the video, simply because things like this are extremely easy to figure out. I figured this one good minute and half before it was finished, so it really was boring and drawn out to me. I just can't be entertained by something that's so blatantly obvious. But I guess, mathematically and logically less inclined people will probably find it at least a bit more interesting. I have listened to some of Professor's radio shows, and while it's obvious he has put a lots of attention and time into his presentations (definitely not all is drawn out as this video) I just can't connect with what he does, for the reasons mentioned. |

I've only used this presentation a couple of times on the radio and it IS rather long. I thought that I'd try it on youtube to see if it fared any better.
It was actually designed to be used for DRIVE TIME (Requires only one hand ) and is much shorter. Thought I'd give this Name, Hair, Eyes LOVE SPELL thing a try. I'm sorry that some of you could see the gaff, but as mentalists, you probably should have. Laymen on the other hand would not be looking for any such thing. IMHO (At least not right away) Traditionally, 50/50 outcomes are a bit difficult to sell as very Amazing, but I tried Thanks for watching and your comments. Now LET'S PARTY!!!!!! ROSHAMBO !!!!!!!!!!

I'm tired of critics attacking performers without displaying any credentials.
It's far too easy to sit back and attack hiding behind anonymity. So my standard response to the "haters" out there is, "Show me you can do better." Once you've done so, then I'll have respect for your opinion. And Lem, that goes for you too. There... satisfied?

THEN you can have fun figuring the method (I'm not just talking about this effect). Don't you want to get an inkling of how your lay audience would feel after experiencing an effect? Don't you want to enjoy magic as you did before discovering its secrets and becoming so analytical? Am I maybe in fairy land and talking crud? |

I hope Picard doesn't mind me saying this, but in a PM he disclosed that a close relative of his was entertained by the presentation and didn't find it too long
And that's the bottom line for me anyway I'm not here to fool the magicians of the world. Just to entertain. I also agree with Philemon. He's a well know entertainer who neither runs nor hides from anyone

You're missing something though and that is simply that, sometimes, for some people, the loss of suspension of belief is what the audience experiences. In any situation where the effect splits ("if your hand is open, do this, if your hand is closed, do this"), there is an immediate loss of the suspension of belief, especially to anybody mathematically inclinded. It's an obvious equalizer. Now, I don't happen to like "Psychic Samurai"'s approach to calling people liars, supporting bullies, or many other things, but I'll tell you what, he used a very old idea, that had been published in many places, to do one of the radio effects he had on a website once upon a time. This was done brilliantly. My personal feelings toward him are irrelevant, the effect (although obvious to magicians) would do exactly what it was supposed to do, amaze people. This effect didn't do that. In fact, it's a mistake to even bring up "suspension of disbelief" because that can be used for any horrible trick. Person A: That trick was terrible. Person B: Did you suspend your disbelief enough? Person A: What? No, there was nothing to compell me to do so. More than that, the method was obvious and the trick dragged on way too long. Person B: Well, that is obviously YOUR fault. I mean, seriously guys, really? This is the kind of approach you want? I hate him but Slim has/had higher standards than this. Philemon has/had higher standards than acting like a bully. We ALL should have higher standards than resorting to the generic "suspension of disbelief" crap. All these things bring us all down. But hey, whatever you guys think is right, that is the take-home message. Don't disagree or you'll get challenged, called a liar, et al. What a big joke. |

I wonder if you make the same stand when it comes to your material. If your audience doesn't respond well to a trick, do you challenge them to do better? I've seen lots of terrible performers take that approach, so it's a valid question. Are your audiences allowed to discuss your show if they didn't like it? If so, how does that dovetail with your classist point of view? Finally, and I want to make sure I am completely clear on your point of view, only people who can do better are ever allowed to say anything critical of anything else? Please, I would be absolutely fascinated to know how you do this. I assume you'll rephrase what you said in some way, which is too bad, I'd like somebody to actually defend what they had to say, no matter how short-sited and utterly ridiculous it is. And your point of view is about as ridiculous as they come. I don't generally have a problem with you outside of this topic, verus Slim, who is a scumbag for reasons I already mentioned. I just think you are about as misguided as can be on this one and I really would like to understand your point of view. |

My audiences are free to walk out on my show, or even ask for a refund.
But if they come up to me afterwards and begin to criticize my performance, then I wonder what their credentials are? It's okay to not like a particular performance, but let's face it, no one has presented a valid critique of Slim's efforts. And I strongly suspect that's because none of the "critics" have ever actually performed. So I'm offering Sidney, Lemniscate and Picard a chance to prove me wrong by revealing their actual identities and show me something they've performed. Then I'll take their critique seriously. Until that time, you're just anonymous audience members who should just quietly leave the show and not come back.

It's clear you have a personal axe to grind, and thus, your opinions are suspect. You're the one who brought up the "ad hominem" attack, and you are engaging in it quite well.

Thanks for trying to derail this thread as most JREFers do But we must get back on track and ignore the anonymous rock throwers like you. If you had the smarts you'd see that a large percentage of Sydney's posts are shots at me (Or Jim) that she has taken since Phenomenon. This has nothing to do with the LOVE SPELL video.

I wonder if Jim Steinmeyer was here to talk about the effect this presentation was generated from if you guys would have the same inclination to criticize and attack. I doubt it. I really deeply doubt it.
As I mentioned before this video was a lesson in creative presentation. Why focus on the negatives? Why try to bring people down? Lem, did you really send Psychic Samurai a PM saying you "hated everything he stood for"? That's revealing of your character, who sends messages out like that? It also completely disqualifies your tirade on this thread in my view.
