As a magician, I often use the snowstorm in china to really bring down the house.
What is the equivalent effect in mentalism. I am wondering what is the quintessential presentation of a mentalism effect to really create a stir in the the audience and close a show with a bang? |

My voices are always telling me to bring the house down... to close the show with a bang!!!
Maybe try the anarchists cookbook? or maybe you could do a mix of Magic and Mentalism and instead of tearing the billet up and burning it you could do a billet snowstorm... nice...

I would try just reading their minds. That seems to go over well.

I always end on a big prediction, either I have predicted the outcomes of the effects throughout the show or I do that days newspaper headline prediction.
Seems to work well for me so far Peace & Love Matt |

It is impossible to say what the "best mentalism closer" is unless you take into account the performer's persona, premise, and the routines they use.

My personal recommendation, since you identify yourself as "a magician," is that your close should be a magic effect or illusion and not a piece of mentalism. Conversely, if you were a mentalist I would be loathe to suggest that you close with a magic trick.
Before my comments precipitate yet another debate about combining magic and mentalism (my thoughts on the subject are well known to those whose opinions matter to me), let me say that I understand and appreciate that there are several top flight professionals who are able to effectively mix/combine the two without diminishing the effectiveness of either; however, they are very much the exception to the rule. The average magician is rarely able to get away with it and is foolish to try. While mentalism is certainly a subset of magic, they are anything but interchangeable. Those magicians with little experience are too often marginally effective magicians and are usually even worse mentalists. Understand that I am only expressing an opinion, not trying to start a debate. You are certainly free to disagree.

I would end with a magic effect, since that is who you really are, a magician,
But you should follow the last big effect with a small effect along with patter. This is done to bring people back down from their excitement. This way you end your program on a personnel note. You ended big, now walk forward and 'work in one'. If a mentalism effect is your calling, then correct a miss....... In other words you missed a prediction earlier, so after some patter (closing remarks) walk over to something and reveal the missed prediction...... Simple, funny and amazing all rolled into one small method of entertainment. Ray |

Go back to Harlan Tarbell. I believe he closed with Seeing With Your Fingertips. He would appearantly identify objects while blindfolded. This will require lots of practice and showmanship but is an example of how a successful magician closed his show with a mentalism effect.

Q&A is definitely up there.
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

Q&A is a tough one to end with because you're relying on the audience's questions and you never know what you're going to get. Also, I wouldn't recommend a magician doing Q&A until they got a lot more comfortable with it.

I am just trying to start a discussion topic here. I am not sure how "you claim to be a magician so do a magic trick" even pertains to my question let alone answers it.
It seems to me like almost all mentalism effects deliver the same reaction...I was wondering if there can be more than this.... How can you build to a climax and end on something that seems like it should be the end....opposed to something that you could have interchanged anywhere in the show? |

It's all about how the mentalist presents it. I've seen Magic Squares used as a closer. I've seen Confabulation used as a closer. While something like Q&A is some of the strongest material you can present, from a theatrical stand point it is hard to close with it. Someone earlier mentioned a blindfold - also very strong and can be used as a closer with the right presentation. It's not the effect - it's the presentation. |

Have you read Ken Weber's "Maximum Entertainment?" One of the most useful suggestions I found in his book (though there are many) has to do with closing material. There isn't enough space here or time to detail everything he said, and to do so might discourage someone here from buying this book, which is among the "top 3" in my personal library. Yes, I own more than three books.
Your material should go from strong to stronger, and then to strongest. If your show is done at a normal pace, you should pick up the pace and the energy at the end. If your show is fast-paced and energetic, slow it down at the end to emphasize the impossibility. I own a wonderful Luke Jermay routine (I'm not inviting stones, here; Jermay has ticked some people off in the past, so I feel it's almost not safe to mention his name on this forum because it causes the blood to boil). At the close of his routine, those audience members who are freely thinking the thoughts he's just revealed are invited to stand... to their amazement, almost the entire audience stands. It leads to a standing ovation, almost guaranteed. They're already standing, and brother, they're amazed. If you can structure such a routine (I'll bet you have the imagination to do it), I believe you'll be rewarded.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.
