I need a little help from the magicians that usually perform for kids. I generally do not perform for children, not that I don't want to, it just hasn't really ever come up. I have worked parties and special events for adults and older children. I recently became a police officer and have discovered that I frequently run into small kids in the course of my job that could stand to see a cop as a good guy and not just someone that comes to arrest mommy and daddy. Or maybe they just someone to help them smile on a bad day.
I am trying to find a fairly quick effect that packs small. Any ideas? If there is some sort of give-away attached to the trick, that would be cool also, but it is not necessary.

Pen through dollar bill is a good one that comes to mind. It's logical that you would carry a pen, probably several. Perform the effect, and then if you want, let the kid keep the dollar bill (or borrow the bill first if they have any money).
A saw a pen through dollar for sale somewhere for $10.00 - I think it was Ron Allesi's magic site. This is a wonderful prop for the money. Jim |

Afillius,
I have been a cop for 14 years. When I was in uniform I always carried a TT and silk and/or spongeballs. I later discovered that the absolutely best thing to carry was a quarter! A simple production/vanish/production was all it took and you can afford to give it away at the end. Good luck! You have the right attitude, more kids need to see us as the "good guys!" The TT is right, because you can pick up small pieces of trash and make them disappear. And move from a quarter to a half-dollar. More magical. And easier to roll on the back of your hands...Even this can be mesmerizing to young children, just before it disappears. Also, a D'Lite, to collect lights from sneakers when they start flashing. You can take them from the sneakers and put them into your flashlight.
I once got a a small packet of FREE TICKETS. They said right on them, "These tickets are not good for anything, they are just free". That might be a fun thing. OR Good Tickets, for good behavior. If you carry a wallet and can make it a production wallet, like the Jacob's Ladder toy/wallet, that might also be handy. Good Luck! -Steve |

Something I am delving into is oragami. Taking a dollar bill, or even a piece of paper, and forming it into a duck or whatever, then presenting it to the child, is something he will treasure forever.

Just a simple french drop and a quarter can be pretty effective and quick with kids. I also do the two-sided quarter, where I show it has two heads, then two tails,
then two heads again. Or the quarter through the back of your hand. Learn a few coin sleights and you can always come up with a quick hitter that's fun.

There's a lovely effect using a dollar bill, with a "door" cut into the centre of the bill. I think it's called "Wonderland Dollar". The spectator holds the door open, looking at the face side of the bill....the bill is folded. Then, when it's unfolded, they are looking at the OTHER side of the bill. My patter draws folks in to my "magical "world....and I do use it to suggest that we live on one or the other side of an invisible wall....which you might like to call the "law".

I agree with Fast Eddie. I always carry four or five sponge balls and a TT in my pocket, and they are very good for impromptu magic for kids. They love the sponge ball multiplication because it happens right in their own hands.
On the other hand, it is one of the easiest effects with sponge balls, but, like I said on a different forum, I think usually the simplest magic is the most impressive. Best regards from Ecuador, Giovanni. |

TTip, Elastic Bands, Sponge Balls, Small silk and a piece of rope and you have a good chance of finding some thing to do with them.
