Hi everyone! I am happy to finally be ready to release my newest effect, SMILEYS!
--------------------------- Smileys The magician has had a bad day. Unlike most people, however, he doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve, he shows them in his coins! The magician draws a sad face on the face of a half dollar. To make the coin feel better, the magician gives it a tickle. The sad face changes to a happy one! Another tickle, and the coin changes to a yellow smiley face! One last tickle, and the smiley face becomes a big smiley face, bringing a big smile to your audience! see it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIz1rjLkIew&feature=channel But wait, there's more! Also included: Smileys jr.: This is a more impromptu looking version of the same effect. The magician borrows a quarter, and draws a sad face on the coin. With a tickle, the frown turns into a smile! Another tickle, and the smile on the coin changes into an even bigger smile, which is returned to the spectator as a happy souvenir of a magical moment. see it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf7HEk7qIic&feature=channel Comes complete with two specially made gimmicked coins, two smiley faces, special gimmick, and a DVD with comprehensive instructions on how to perform both effects. NOTE - EUROPEAN VERSION AVAILABLE, with one specially made gmmicked euro coin that can be used in BOTH effects! PM me for details! Available at http://www.newyorkcoinmagic.net/Rubinstein.htm

Hi Magicman, thanks for your post. I think there is always a question of value - is the price you pay worth the trick? I guess it depends on what you get. Here, you get not one, but TWO effects, that can be used for different situations. They always bring a smile to the specator. You get a DVD,and not one, but two gimmicked coins that you can't find anywhere else (they have been made to my specifications, and are not available like this in any other venue). You get two specially made smiley faces, that are produced in good quality material, and you get a special extra gimmick that is needed for one of the effects. The coins and props that are included, can be used for many other ideas as well, you aere just limited by your imagination. In this day of one trick DVD's that cost $30, I think this is actually a bargain.

Um, some DVDs with single effects do go for $30, yes. Before every trick came with a DVD, you would often still pay $30-40 for a single trick.
So, a "single" effect being sold in that price range, AND it comes with a DVD, instead of poorly written instructions, which were translated from a foreign language, as these effects would have been sold, for a similar price, is, IMHO, still a *** good deal. Of course, it depends on the effect, and the inclusion of props, etc. But mainly, and most importantly, it depends on, as mentioned, the EFFECT, and whether or not it is worth it. Many effects are, but, just because you are releasing a "single" effect does NOT make it worth that. THIS effect, IMHO, is NOT worth it. You say you are including "two" effects, but one is just a variation of the other. In fact more of a truncated version of it. The is NOT a second effect being included. Just a variation on ONE effect. In fact, the "one" effect is just another variation on a classic, the Spellbound routine. Now, the idea is a nice one, but it is also one that has been over complicated by the inclusion of superfluous gimmicks. The Smiley face buttons being included is a benefit, but there is no need for gimmicked coins, based on the routines in the videos. So, in the end, you are selling two variations on one effect, which is itself, a variation of another effect, and it has been inflated by throwing in unnecessary gimmicks, and then sold for $45. These two routines could have been written on two pages in a book, in which many other effects could be written, and the entire book could have been sold for $45. As a single effect, sold with a dvd, IMHO, should have been the DVD, the smiley face buttons, and a price tag of $15-20, but that's just me.

Thank you for your post. I would have to respectfully disagree with you. There are two effects included, and yes, they are similar. Effect number one can not be done with a borrowed coin, as it turns into a yellow smiley face, which of course, cannot be returned. However, it plays very well. The second effect involves borrowing a coin, doing magic to it, and returning the coin that has changed. It plays smaller, but in many ways is more powerful, because they are left with a coin that has "transformed". People have kept these coins instead of spending them, and are left with a memory of YOU. Both effects, though similar, are strong enough that I felt both needed to be included. As for the special coins, I decided that if I wanted to include both effects the borrowed coin needed to be a quarter, and the half dollar is bigger and would play well for that effect (which plays for a larger crowd, and necessitated a bigger coin). The coins are made to my specifications, and can not be bought commercially. However, the coins (and props) can be used for many other effects that use the same principle, as well as whatever stimulates your imagination. I also sell it in a 50 cent Euro version with only one coin, as they can borrow that, and there is no bigger coin in the euro line. The cost is the same, as it is more expensive to work with these coins.
As for your last points, the tricks can not be done as cleanly with pure sleight of hand, and I would say (as someone who works exclusively with coins and has put out enough material with pure sleight of hand to know what should be kept pure), that the use of the gimmick cleans up the effect, as well as coin management. This is NOT just a multi coin spellbound, and having played with the effect as long as I have, its just not as practical to do with pure sleight of hand. The last thing you want to get into is a traffic problem, which is eliminated with the gaff (but if you feel that you can do it comfortably, more power to you! I feel most people can not, and if your hands looked cramped, that would deter from the effect.. As for the cost, this is compiuted based on the cost of the materials, and profit margin after selling to jobbers at 60% off retail, as with most effects. So, you get two quality effects, one that has an impromputu feel to it, and the other that is more of a "professional" looking effect, gimmicks and props that are well constructed, and a DVD which I feel makes learning the handling easier (and is in fact the least expensive item). Value is what you make of it. In MY opinion, if I buy something regardless of the cost, and it sits on my shelf, THAT is bad value. If I buy something and get a lot of play from it, then I have spent well. The buyer will need to decide if this is good value for them - the response that I have received so far from the people I have sold it to has been very good. Quote from Peter Duffie, "Glad to see you are releasing SMILEYS! This is a great effect—very magical and ultra-commercial." From Rannie Raqymundo, "I was probably one of the first to see SMILEYS. The good Dr. and I worked at the Japan Cup Close Up Convention last year. It always garnered great reactions....what else ...SMILES! I highly recomend this. I particularly like the "junior" version." And from the internet, "Now, THAT one is imaginative". "Packs small, great for strolling magic", "It passes the wife test", " I highly reccomend this", etc! the effect is available on my website, and soon through dealers all over the USA. I hope you enjoy performing SMILEYS and SMILEYS jr, as much as I do.

I completely agree with this. I love the idea of the effect. From the sounds of it, the part(s) that is(are) responsible for the majority of the price, or at least the largest portion, would be the gimmicks. I see the purpose of the gimmicks, I guess it just feels like an excessive gimmick, for such a minor benefit.

It has always been available, just at my lectures. With the pubblication of my book, Rubinstein Coin Magic, I decided to release it commercially again because the description of the routine is in the book, and people might want to pick up the props. Actually a second version with a quarter is going to be released soon, that looks more impromptu but has the same basic idea.
