Carney handles cards "left"-handed, but I believe he's right-hand dominant.
And I agree with Jell on not seeing the advantages of being a leftie. Maybe Ortiz can publish the peeks Youell mentions for, you know, us oppressed folk. The "Sinister Glimpse" is fine, but I find it difficult to imagine it first saw print in S&F. I had independently come up with the same peek, and I'm sure the move occurred to many lefties doing a bottom square-up glimpse. Right-handers have the Draun fan peek. Someone mentioned it in another thread awhile ago, but there's an old issue of MAGIC MAGAZINE (circa 1994) allegedly dedicated to sleights-for-southpaws.

I'm right-handed normally, but handle the cards as a left-hander.
I was told by a prominent card man from the UK that it should make the 'Classic Force' easier and more sure-fire (although I don't know why!) Hi Gary btw. Hope you are well. Sorry can't get down to see you at Chris's meeting, I'm away on my hols! |

It really depends on how you feel with each individual technique. For example, when doing a table running cut, I do it in the standard right handed manner. However, whenever I want to strip the deck, I strip left handed. I spread the cards like a righty but I shuffle in the hands like a lefty. It really just depends what works for you. Play around with it.
As mentioned, Bill Malone is a lefty, but he does his 'card from mouth' technique right handed. Noone ever notices his change in dealing grips. Ed |

Not being able to do many of the standard peeks due to being a leftie, I've had to develop some of my own. All the best, Gary Jones.

Because as you spread, the pips are momentarily hidden from the spectator(s) by your right thumb, but you can see them, so you can spot the card to cull before the spec has a chance to do so. Same logic goes for I.D too albeit to a lesser extent, and (assuming you are facing the spectator) the pips appear the right way round for them. You do have to spread the deck slightly differently though, not in a fan towards yourself, but more towards them, but that's no bad thing. |

Gary,
I'm sure that being drunk and being left-handed probably means you care less about missing. I can't remember when either of us were drunk, but that's probably the drink! I've already got my money's worth out of your 'Twisting' routine matey, so thanks for that. Alan |

I learned the Fred Robinson Ambitious Riser specifically to use it for Ray Kosby's Deep Thought. However, because I'm a lefty, I can't perform the routine as described on Ray's DVD. It can be frustrating, but lefties always prevail.

Man Eric, I never thought of that... could you do a reverse fan in your right hand? We need to get together soon man...
Also, On topic... Lefties do have it much harder, but there are plenty of big names that have made it left handed so it's not impossible, and if anything looks weird, you can just say it's because you're left handed... Also to Pete's comment earlier, I can totally see how that makes sense for a card mechanic, not a magician. The mechanic can take moves and make them look different and people can't question it. Thanks, Pete

I am left-handed as well.
I don't know if I do my magic right handed or left handed. If you hold the deck in your left hand, and do a DL with your right fingers, is that considered doing magic LHed or RHed? I fan holding the deck in my left hand, so I get the nice blank look... on the deck not the spectators. RevJohn |

Answer to question 1...you are a righty.
Answer to statement 2...you are a righty doing a reverse fan. Cardamagically, Dom

I have a feeling that I do a little left, and a little right...
And I just realized that I do fan holding the deck in my right hand... Whatever feels right... er, or left. But that helps. I was wondering. Back to writing with my left hand, and thinking with my right side of the brain. John |

Lee Asher is also a lefty and you should definitely look up his pulp friction move if you don't already have his lecture notes. Also check out his losing control, easier for lefties. Check out his website if you haven't already. Good stuff on there.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

But Lee Asher teaches his stuff for rightys, so it makes thing even more frustrating.

True, he does teach for the right handed bretheren. But he makes occasional references to his being left handed and how that actually makes several of his moves easier. That was my point. It took me quite a while to feel comfortable with a reverse spread for pulp friction.

I thought you leftys might want to check out Tyler Wilson's Dominatricks book. It comes with a PDF of the book written for Leftys. Plus it has a terrific color change for left handers from Jack Parker.
I recently learned to handle cards in my right hand for a trick I'm working on because being a lefty was the best solution. Ray |

I think that if you have been working with cards for some time as a left-hander, you should go with what feels comfortable for you. I'm left-handed, and when I learn a new effect, I just follow the directions. If it doesn't feel good, I change it. I have found that I have been doing some things "wrong," but for the most part, it works for me. If I tried to change things now, it would just mess me up (which is easy enough to do as it is).
