I used to think it shouldn't be advertised until it's physically on site, but with competition, I don't think that's reasonable. As long as the shop is reputable and ships when it arrives, I'm ok with that these days. But, that's me. Everyone has to make their own choices.

I look forward to Jon's DVD set. Jon performed many of his pet effects at the IBM convention in Reno, where a number of us also got to watch him privately. I usually try to take one trick from a convention to put into my shows, and that year I decided to do Jon's 3-Blank Monte for several reasons: First, the trick eliminates the "I fooled you; you're stupid" aspect most Monte routines, including even Vernon's famous Hanky Poo routine, which I had done for many years. Second, Jon's version uses blank cards and a Monte card that is a blank signed by the spectator, which personalizes the trick and eliminates spectators' thinking there are duplicate cards. Third, the use of two identical, blank; indifferent cards allows several moves that are not possible with printed cards of different value. Fourth, there is a punch finish in that the signed, Monte card ends up inside a compartment of the magician's wallet (think Draun wallet). Finally, the trick can be done sitting or standing and with or without a jacket. Thus, the trick meets a lot of the criteria most magicians would require for a trick to be a staple of his or her close-up show.
I learned the trick from Jon's own, home grown DVD that he was offering at the convention and from the Genii article that appeared last year. Nevertheless, given the high quality of all L&L presentations, I would expect even better handling of this trick than previously available. And there are lots more effects in the L&L bundle. Based on my experience with this great trick and with Jon's clarity in explaining how to do it, I expect the new DVD set to be a remarkable one. Jim Mullen

Murphy's lists the set, so I would think the shops have them this week. Call your favorite place and ask.

I don't know how Armstrong does it but you can present a monte as a narrative so the spectator is at least mentally picking the 'right card' and they will be wrong but you are not putting them in the position of being wrong the person in the narrative is. Eason takes this approach where he is the person being taken in the story line.

Hey there Count! Let me see if I can clear this up for you...
The normal sting of most three card monte tricks is softened in this routine a few ways. First, they only chose wrong 3 times and each time they get it wrong, I let them know that it was not their fault and that I cheated and they could not get it right no matter what (which is not really true, and sometimes they do get it right. In other montes, this would make the performer loose face, but here I have designed it so that no matter what they pick, you are still in control and there is still an effect each time. Also, the spectator is "prequalfied" to be willing to play along by things built into the beginning of the routine. All of this is explained in great detail on the disk.). Second, I always tell them where the card is! If they go against me, it's not my fault (wink, wink). Finally, the magic impact of the last phase and the "free gift" they get at the end is what they remember. Most montes just end with yet another time of them getting it wrong. This ends with a happy moment and a real bit of amazement. If you get the DVD and watch my teaching segment on this trick, you will see what I'm talking about. Hope that helps! Jon |

I had heard of Jon Armstrong and then on reel Magic got to see him and look forward to his teaching segments each issue.
I watched Volume 1 of the set tonight. Who the %#$% is this guy? He's funny, gifted, and the effects were entertaining. I'm very much looking forward to the next two volumes!

I finally got a chance to sit down and watch vol. 3 -- again Great Stuff!!! Not only is this one of the most enjoyable sets that I have watched in a long time -- Jon is a great performer and he enjoys what he does, which shows in his performances! There is also a lot of Great Material that Jon is giving away!!!
I won't bore you with which are my favorites, etc... but I can tell you that there were multiple items on each of the DVD's that would be well worth the time spent to learn -- IMHO! There is one small thing that I didn't really care for about the DVD's, and that is that the performance is split up with the explanations. I prefer to watch all of the performance section and then watch the explanations. But that has nothing to do with Jon and it's just a preference on my part. For those of you that are waiting on these -- don't! Great job Jon! Robert |

For those that have this set, is there one dvd that stands out among the 3 for you, and why?
