Wherein lies the value of attempting to stifle such opinions whether "educated" or not?

You should never stifle anything. All opinions are welcome... I just give them different weight depending on the experience they come from. I tend to gain more from opinions that come from people similarly educated in what they are discussing. That's the whole concept of pure peer relationships and the reciprocity that develops.

I interpreted WDI's comments as sarcasim, to be honest I really don't know what he means by this...

lol... What an intelligent discussion this is! I think that's all I really wanted is a place where we can intelligently discuss opinions on the many facets of magic. We can take facts that come from educated views and have varying opinions on them. This is a perfect forum for that discourse.

In general WDI's comments are so amorphous and nebulous that I really don't know what his position is.

Overall the show is not that bad and I feel Brad has been too harsh. However, any oppinions offered here should be given some weight- I hope WDI agrees that it's O.K. to post some opinions as long as they are honest and dignified.

No, to the contrary.. it was surprise!!

Your comments were both astute and well stated. It was so refreshing to read someone who actually took the time to make an infomred opinion about things. You and Brad were both making intelligently written comments and I honestly admired the thought that went onto them.

Sarcasm is sometimes difficult to interpret online. I think we've all been guilty of missing that at times. lol... if I'm being sarcastic I'll try and be REALLY obvious about it!

It's Ray, BTW... and at the time of writing... I was seated.

Absolutely! Any opinions can offer insight into other people's thinking... but if you're sick or injured... you would prefer the opinion of a trained Doctor. His opinion would and should carry more weight than this friend in high school who read a book on biology. I guess I'm the same with magic.

Sorry, again for the misunderstanding on my lack of sarcastic intent. It will be back soon, I'm sure!

(OK, so after reading that I can see why I'm hard to understand!)

Thanks for taking the time to clarify your position (seated... LOL) yes sometimes it is impossible to determine things like tone and sarcasim in this forum.

There are many interesting aspects that could be discussed but I feel they might require another thread as this one is running at a very serpentine 11 pages already.

Perhaps I'll begin a thread or two in which we can discuss specific issues related to the show that I think may be interesting and constructive.

It's one thing to dicuss the performance of magic without clear availible examples and another (great thing) to have such a wealth of different performances from which to gadge specific topics.

Caught the last half of tonight's installment.

Painful, to say the least. Not one interesting personality, not one person I'd like to get to know better. Offensive Chinese restaurant "jokes." Endless, witless, find the right card routine. A guy in dark glasses in some contraption for the grand finale.

I only hope for the sake of magic that the first half was a LOT better.

If these are considered the top magicians of the day, we are seriously fooling ourselves.

Good Lord, there is more talent and entertainment in three minutes of Derren Brown than hours of this dreck.

Does anyone have a list of who was on each episode and what they performed?

I do love that Gay is doing this show - what bugs me is the addition of some things that weren't needed. I know it's been said before but I had to add my two cents anyway. The little *clash* sound that is inserted every time something vanishes or appears is overkill and I found it to get very tiring, hearing that same little sound effect every time. To me it made some acts appear more cheesy and was not at all necessary. I've seen Tony Clark's card routine multiple times (he's my teacher) and the act is beautiful with just his background music. When he did it on the show that clashing sound was inserted every time he made a card disappear, and for me it made the act look cheaper. Why mess with something that already works? It didn't make it any more magical...it was an obnoxious addition to the routines.
