Are there still some sideshows on the fairgrounds in Europe, especially in Germany or France?

Germany used to be the tops for sideshows (Going back 10 years or so now) Their Fests always included live and static exhibitions of note Wall of Death was also in demand.
The Showfronts at that time were all of a very high standard as well. Used to do the Forces run coupled into the Fests, both of which sadly vanished along with the good income. Fetish events still display live sideshow from time to time and the Germans are really into this ! As for France, we do a little bit of Cabaret there but of note would be the number of street entertainers who use sideshow as street entertainment especialy in Paris. Ken. |

On http://www.schaubuden.de (Schaubuden = German Sideshows) you find lots of pictures from the 1920s up to the 1980s. In France there were some girl-to-gorilla-shows on tour until some years ago. Like this one: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3143/2431......146e.jpg And in Germany I visited different Walls of Death, Sideshows and Cabaret-Shows up to the late 1990s. Some pictures of the great showfronts you can find on http://www.ride-index.de Like this Shark Show: http://ride-index.de/include.php?path=co......ntid=899 Or this typical European Sideshow: http://ride-index.de/include.php?path=co......tid=1028 BUT I DID NOT FIND ANY INFORMATION if there are still some shows like these on the fairgrounds. Does anyone know if there are still some traveling (fairground-)sideshows in France/Germany/Europe? |

Regarding the Wall of Death shows. A lot of these were invited to attend (Some on a fixed fee) From all over.
From the UK Meeshams, Alan Fords and Ken Fox`s have all attended at some time or other. I presume there is a Guild to cover the German amusement biz like the Showmans over here. This, I think would be the way to go for info. Ken. |

Most of the Euro performers I know, are independent, and have moved into working clubs. Some still work the streets.

In the past there have been realy great show in Europe. On http://www.schaubuden.de (Schaubuden = German Sideshows) you find lots of pictures from the 1920s up to the 1980s. At the very least some of the illusion-based sideshows originated on the continent, then were brought over to the UK and USA (e.g. headless lady in Germany). Germany was also a real hotbed for flea circuses when they were becoming popular from the late 19th century. There is still an authentic flea circus at the Oktoberfest in Munich, run as a traditional sideshow. I'm not aware that they tour anywhere else though. Until recently there was also a mouse circus there, but it wasn't there the last time I went a few years ago... |

I can't really contribute anything to the discussion here, since I haven never run into a sideshow yet here in Germany...and I've lived here since 1995, and LOVE this stuff. I've been to a ton of fairs, but I've never seen one.
But I did want to say how much I appreciated those links. The http://www.schaubuden.de link is wonderful...and solid gold. Wonderful. And while I haven't yet spent a lot of time on http://www.ride-index.de, it also looks very good. So thanks for those links. |

The flea circus is still at the Oktoberfest - since more than 50 years now: http://www.muenchenblogger.de/der-flohzi......wirklich
Another show you can find at the Oktoberfest - and only at the Oktoberfest - is the Schichtl Show: http://schichtl.by But this is more a comedy show than a sideshow. What you sometimes still can see at the German fairgrounds are boxing shows like this one: http://ride-index.de/include.php?path=co......entid=85 The last traveling illusion-based sideshow I saw at some German fairs about 2 or 3 years ago was this one: http://ride-index.de/include.php?path=co......ntid=488 But I do not know if they are still traveling. This sideshow might also still travel at the fairs http://claudia.kirmes24.com/include.php?......entid=27 - at least they have an actual website: http://www.paradox-show.de But I do not know if it is a German show or if the show comes from the UK (Miller is no average German name) And one more picture of a German show: http://claudia.kirmes24.com/include.php?......entid=38 In France - as Kondini wrote - they do more cabaret shows (Entresorts = French Sideshows). I have found this video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ585l6X6Rc |

The shark show listed above appeared in Dublin at
the annual indoor "Funderland" back in the 1980s. The showfront housed the tank and shark ( monk shark, I believe) and the public stood on a slanted floor to watch the show. It was a pay at the door attraction and not booked by the promoters as a free attraction. At that time it was for sale. A rumour during the 90s was that a prominent English showman had bought it. |
