Which Axtell puppets are you talking about?

John,
If you're referring to the Axtell puppets in general, I'd say LOTS AND LOTS of vents all over the world are using them. They're the industry standard, so to speak, when we talk of soft/latex puppets. They're VERY POPULAR! Over the years I might have used/owned more than a dozen Axtell items. |

So far I have tried the ff and loved them all...
Orangutan, gorilla, pelican, shark, seal, parrot, chicken, all American bird, turtle, wild thing, bulldog, ostrich, story teller and cry baby. Some of them I had to sell because I just have too many...and some of them I just don't have the voice to match the character...or maybe I had to sell some to buy more I kept the best sellers in my act...orangutan, parrot, all American, turtle and ostrich. The ostrich arrived last Monday...I will try it out this weekend in my gigs and see how people will react to it. Generally, Axtell puppets get very good response from the audience. They are reputation builders. Oh by the way...I also use the MDB and SFXDB as well as the Big Baby and Off the Meter. My wishlist: Remote Drawing Board and a Hands Free Orangutan Thanks Wanlu

I start my shows with the RDB and it's a totally winner EVERY time. Was asked last week how it's done. Told it was a trade secret.

Wanlu...Can you share your experience with using the ostrich ?
How was the weight on your arm after a few minutes ? Did it feel like more work since the puppet is so tall ? Did you take it to the show with the ball inflated, or collapsed ? I am wondering how storing and transporting the puppet in a collapsed state might affect its looks over time. Carrying it inflated will take up some serious case space. I have been really intrigued with this puppet, and since I am putting together a bird show, this figure has been in my sights since the concept first sprouted. It is one unique figure, and seems to be a big seller for Steve, judging from all the pix of ostrich owners on his website. For the price, it also seems like a good deal, since the impact onstage is so big. Mark

More work of course in terms of manipulation but also more visual stuff for the audience which makes a performer look good I transposted it collapsed and inflated it before the show...my problem right now is where to keep it before I bring him out and where and how to put it back in a box or something without making it appear like animal cruelty. This is very well worth the price...no doubt about it! Try it Mark...you won't regret getting one. Wanlu

I still think the crate's a good idea, Wanlu.
But make it out of stage flats hooked together with loose pin hinges, so you can transport the ostrich in whatever you're already using for it, and you can transport the crate parts (May not even need a full upstage back) flat...then you can put it together in the wings, ready to go. Maybe even have it already set up with the magic so use it as a table for magic or figure perch for other creatures. That way the crate could be "big," but not take up a lot of room transporting. |

Not sure how well he folds up but could you make up three boxes to look like one long box that's tall enough for him to stand in. Then you could put him in one and the do a miss made ostrich! A little door and some fake fir in one and maybe a spare set of feet from Steve in the other and you could still opperate the mout in the one that has the puppet in it.
If no one is doing this can I register it as "mIne"? I would love an Ostrich with the blinkers!

I have one of the Axtell baby chimp puppets. I'm not a vent, but I use him to help me perform a card effect in my stage show. It amazes me EVERY time I bring him out, you can hear all the female audience members say "Awwwwww". He's THAT realistic.
I wouldn't trade him for all of the tea in China!

P.S. Large puppets, like Wanlu's ostrich, open themselves up to some other opportunities I think. Here is a clip (the topic is not intended) that I think very effectively shows one of them:

My wife just got the Axtell skunk puppet and everyone loves it. It seems to be a "Petunia" and she will sing the old song "I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch.." Problem is your hand getting sweaty with that latex when handling the mouth. Axtell sells liners and we bought one, but she does not find that easy and feels it is just as slippery. I think something could be done--trying to glue some liner in there to help avoid the slickness when working the mouth.
