I have been working on a dairy to use in a seance routine. I found a nice looking book and I am handwriting the pages with a dip pen and ink. I want to be able to add gimmicks to the book. I haven't come across all that much in the way of techniques.
I am looking for information or sources on techniques. I don't want referrals to commercial products because I want to make my own with my story line. I have Arcana of Bizarre Magic, so I know there are some clever ideas in there that I plan to incorporate. Also of course, the Coloring Book method of gimmicking a book. What else am I missing? I am not asking for methods to be tipped on a public forum, but I would appreciate any help on sources or PM me any ideas I am missing. |

There are some elements in my "Bizarre Book" e-Book from The Wizards' Journal #9 (on my site) that could inspire you to "think outside the book."

Whats the story behind the diary?
Is it haunted? A tuning crystal to the 'other side' Who owned it? What kind of life did they have? Whats written in the book? ...or the who, what, why, where and when's? All these and many more questions will determine what the book does.

Good point.
The diary is written by a family member. I never knew of him since he moved up North after his wife died. This was in the early 1900's. Most of our family was in the South. My great uncle gave me a box full of stuff he found in the house. The property had an offer on it and he went and searched through the house to see if he could find anything of worth before selling the land. It had sat vacant since it burned down. There was an old safe and in this safe he found an old box with some stuff in it, including this diary. My great uncle gave it to me since I like history and there was nothing of value. Also, I was working on a family history, so this was really interesting. This relative was keeping a diary of his day to day life. Pretty standard stuff. He was a writer, nothing you or I ever heard of. He wrote about the excitement of the move to an old family house. He wrote about how he missed his wife, how he spoke to her and how he started seeing her. He know that he wasn't really seeing her. It was just the grief, wasn't it? Strange things started happening at the house. Visions, ghosts maybe? When he broke through part of the wall into the attic he definitely found some strange things. Symbols on the floor, occult tools. The diary clearly tracks a deteriorating mental state. At the end, it appears that maybe he killed himself? Maybe he was killed? It isn't really clear and that is the mystery. If I can conjure up the spirit of his dead wife, maybe I can find out what happened. From reading the diary, I get the feeling that most of the stuff in the box was hers. Maybe this will allow me to contact her? I want to solve this family mystery. |

Are you able to attach a pendant or something on the cover with a rare earth magnet embedded in it so that you can cause it to flip oen via a reverse pole under the table top . Just a thought ...

Hey paulyp,
Just pm'ed some ideas, but your description of the diary format suggests that most aren't going to fit with the theme. Hmmm... I'll think on it some more. I'd love it if this topic were also in the Crypt so that it could be more openly discussed. cheers |

In John Fisher's book " Body Magic, there is is a version of the haunted key in which the key is sandwiched between the pages of the book USing this in your seance would give you the best of both worlds.

Thanks for all of the ideas guys. I am going to try to incorporate as many things as I can into one book. My idea is that some of them can be used some time, some can be used at other times. I have references to fortunetelling items, charts, cards, pieces of wood (telekinetic timber), keys (haunted key), locks and other things that could be introduced as props if desired. I would like to be able to do several different types of presentation using this same book. I am excited about this.
KOTAH- Body Magic is a new one to me. I did a quick search and it is pretty pricey. Is this book pretty good overall? |
