I've been rereading If I Were You recently and just last night came across a perfect example of why I love Wodehouse so much:
One gentleman was asking another how one proposes (marriage). The latter said that one must seize the opportunity as it presents itself. The first asked the second how he proposed to his first wife. The second answered that they were sitting in a cemetary and he asked her how she would feel about seeing his name on her headstone. |

Wodehouse is holy.
The greatest comic writer in the English language. Now, I have to dash off to "The Best" thread to say that. |

When I was younger I loved Douglas Adams immensely (still do), only later did I realize how heavily he was influenced by Wodehouse, and had to devour his works as well!
If you're on the fence about this, check out the BBC's "Jeeves and Wooster" for a little taste of Wodehouse... "He was white and shaken, like a dry martini." -P.G. Wodehouse I know I was writing stories when I was five. I don't know what I did before that. Just loafed I suppose. -P.G. Wodehouse

Wodehouse, Chesterton, Twain... they did it all first. And best.
